Do you realize that the last time the Skins swept the boys was ten years ago in 1995?

Do you realize that from 1995 to 2005 the boys have swept the skins 6 of those 10 years?

Do you realize that from 1995-2005 the cowboys record vs the skins is 15-5?

Do you realize that in the last 14 games Washington has only won ONE game?

So now you come on here and predict a sweep...surely you do not think you will be taken serious.

What I think you mean to say is How does Dallas getting a revamped pass rush, and upgrasde at QB, a MAJOR upgrade at RCB, Upgrade at DT, upgrade on Oline, and Julius Jones for a full year beat your overhaul of wr's consisting of Trading Coles for Moss which makes you no better. Or maybe bringing in a 31 year old WR named Patten or 30 year old Dyson who has a total of 2 catches since 2002 wow great overhaul. yes you got someones backup center, a second rd QB you traded 3 picks for, another young QB starting that your coach hates, and a young CB who wont be starting right away.

Its prolly too early to set lines, certainly too early to place the rent money on it.

What if TO sits out the whole year (god I can only hope so)? what happens to their line?

What IF Sean Taylor cant play this year? (god I can only hope so)what happens to their line?

What if Brady tears a knee up and is out for the year (heaven forbid)? they still the favorites?
i can't understand why anybody would feel comfortable placing full-season, game-by-game, wagers this early.

just contemplating how the weekly "injury report" affects wagering is enough to put me off.

all i can figure is the payout must be better for placing bets that far ahead. otherwise, i don't get the attraction of early wagering. at least not in flippin' june.

IMO, NFL football is the "safest" team-sport to bet on.

but only on a "week-to-week" basis.

Asthma Field, that was flat out the best summary of the Skins off season and that board's homer reaction to it I can imagine.

You've got it all down, brother.

The rationalizing - "Lav's Big Toe"; the wishful thinking - no, Smoots loss after Bailey's is no big deal; and most of all, because it is the most easily discernable "flavor" there - the supercilious, look-down-your-nose 'tude re the knowledge base of rival teams' fans.

Big laugh and double agreement!!

how are we inferior to u?

Ok, you want a long detailed answer? Here's a pretty straight-forward pair of write-ups from NFL Countdown. Since we were the better team last year (although that doesn't say much) we'll have to take a look at this past off-season to try to genuinely project which team should be better in the future. So to answer the question; "Why are the Commanders inferior to the Cowboys"

Dallas Cowboys '05 Draft Review
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Wright
President, NFL Draft Countdown

In his first season at the helm in 2003, Bill Parcells and the Cowboys exceeded expectations but in the end that may have been less of a blessing and more of a curse as it led to 2004 being just that much more disappointing. The team took a step backwards, but armed with two 1st round picks as well as ample cap room to make a splurge in free agency, the Tuna hopes to have "America's Team" back in contention very soon, maybe even as early as 2005.

Being the defensive master that he is, Parcells knows that even the best cornerbacks can cover for only so long, thus making an impact pass rush essential. Enter Troy defensive end / outside linebacker Demarcus Ware. A 'tweener who will either play linebacker in a 3-4 scheme or end in a 4-3, Ware was one of the elite natural pass rushers available in this draft. In past stops Parcells has used high picks on the likes of Willie McGinist and John Abraham so it wasn't a surprise to see the team to snatch up a similar player in Ware. He may not be an every down player as a rookie but look for him to make his presence known on passing downs. With the pick they acquired from Buffalo on Draft Day a year ago the team lucked out and had L.S.U. defensive end Marcus Spears fall into their laps. A big guy with great athleticism, Spears is an ideal fit as a 3-4 defense end. The team considered him with their first pick so to get him at #20 was a coup. Look for both of these guys to signifigantly bolster the pass rush and infuse some youth and athleticism to a defensive front that desperately needed it.

In round two I feel the Cowboys got a steal in Tennessee outside linebacker Kevin Burnett. A tremendous athlete with the speed to go from sideline to sideline and make plays, I think Burnett will work his way into the starting lineup at some point early in his career. There was talk that Dallas had planned on selecting Maurice Clarett in round four but with the Broncos beating them to the punch they instead opted to use the choice on Minnesota running back Marion Barber III. A very productive runner, Barber slipped a little due to the strong crop of runners but should eventually provide a nice backup and short yardage option behind Julius Jones. In fact, don't be shocked if he beats out Anthony Thomas for the job as a rookie and he could help out as a return man as well.

Dallas moved back into late round three to land what could end up being one of the steals of the draft in Virginia defensive end Chris Canty. A prototypical 3-4 end who in a lot of ways is similar to Marcus Spears, the only reason Canty fell as far as he did was due to injuries. If he gets back to 100% there is a strong chance they got a 1st round talent at the end of round three. Later in round seven the team chose one more defensive lineman in Auburn's Jay Ratliff. A 'tweener who can play either tackle or end, look for Ratliff to play outside in their 3-4 scheme.

With their two sixth round picks the Cowboys tabbed one more defender as well as a hog along the offensive line. Ball St. safety Justin Beriault is a productive, in-the-box type who should be an excellent special teamer and a solid backup for Roy Williams. Meanwhile, offensive tackle Rob Pettiti of Pittsburgh needs to keep his weight in check but has a ton of experience and made a name for himself by shutting down the likes of Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka in this matchups. With the uncertainty up front there will be an opportunity for Pettiti to shine.

You have to admire how the Cowboys didn't just sit back and accept their plight. Instead the team went out and made a major splash in free agency by adding Jason Ferguson and Anthony Henry while drafting guys like Demarcus Ware and Marcus Spears, who will all be ideal fits for their new defensive scheme. All this together should dramatically upgrade a defense that just wasn't up to par in '04 and could be pointed to as a major reason for their lackluster performance. That coupled with having Julius Jones and a running game for the entire season could lead to a major turnaround for the franchise and this could end up being a classic example of how a team can better itself in just one offseason.
...and the Commanders offseason

Washington Commanders '05 Draft Review
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Wright
President, NFL Draft Countdown
Oh those Washington Commanders. Once again this was a team who made headlines in the offseason, even though they have not been their free-spending selves and have actually lost more big named free agents (Fred Smoot, Antonio Pierce) than they have signed. Despite a lack of high-profile signings Washington still had one of the most intriguing offseasons, mostly due to one draft pick. A franchise which has lacked direction in recent years seems to be chasing its tail once again, stuck somewhere in the middle of trying to win now and building for the future.

With their initial first round pick there was little doubt what position the team would address, merely which player they would do it with. After losing Smoot to the Minnesota Vikings in free agency there was a major hole opposite of Shawn Springs in the secondary and most assumed the team would take one of the three premier cornerback available. With Pac-Man Jones and Antrel Rolle coming off the board just ahead of them the decision to choose Carlos Rogers of Auburn at #9 was made easy. The Thorpe Award winner, Rogers has everything you look for in a top corner physically and should help ease the loss of Smoot.

The Commanders made waves just days before the draft when they traded a package of picks to Denver, including their 1st rounder in 2006, to leap back into late round one at #25 overall. Right after this move was made word leaked that the guy they were targeting was Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell. Many, like myself, thought this was merely a smokescreen since no team could be stupid enough to make such a major move like that only to let it be known the guy they wanted. It would just give other teams who coveted the same player too much time to maneuver ahead of them and steal that player away. It seems we all forgot that this was the Washington Commanders we are talking about. Campbell was indeed the player they wanted and fortunately for them he was still on the board when it came time for them to select. A top prep recruit who struggled for most of his career under a multitude of different offensive coordinators, Campbell finally put it all together in 2004 as a senior and led Auburn to an undefeated season. Was this a fluke or a sign of things to come once he grasped a system? We will have to wait to find out the answer to that query.

With two of their precious few their choices the team tabbed fullbacks Manuel White of U.C.L.A. and Nehemiah Broughton of The Citadel in rounds four and seven. White played tailback with the Bruins for the most part but will likely be a versatile fullback who can run and catch in the pros. Still, the fourth round was much too high for him. As for Broughton, despite his small school roots he has some interesting physical tools in terms of size and speed. At the end of the day though was this a team that needed to use two of their selections on a position most teams don't even bother using draft picks on?

Finally, in rounds five and six the Skins chose to address their lack of depth at linebacker with Robert McCune of Louisville and Jared Newberry of Stanford. A physical freak and workout warrior, you won't find a more impressive physical specimen than McCune and while he is a little older than you would prefer after having served in the military before going to college he could be a steal for them with the 154th pick overall. As for Newberry, he is a good athlete with solid mobility that would seem to make him an ideal backup/situational player at the pro level. After losing Antonio Pierce as a free agent there was definitely a need to bolster the depth at linebacker and with these two picks the team did just that.

I do not like what this team did at all and beyond Rogers and McCune they didn't do a whole lot in my opinion. My biggest problem with this class is Campbell, and not because I don't think he can be a very good player but because the team did not need him. They already have a former 1st round pick in Patrick Ramsey who has never gotten a chance to prove himself and could still be a great pro, not to mention a very highly paid backup in veteran Mark Brunell. One of two things will happen with Campbell, either A) He starts as a rookie in which case the team is rebuilding and will be set back a couple of years or B) He sits the entire season as the #3 signal caller in which case they have nothing to show for 1st round picks in 2005 and 2006. It just doesn't make sense to me. Once again this is a franchise that's left hand doesn't know what the right is doing and seems like a dog chasing its own tail. For better or worse they need to pick a direction and stick with it rather than changing course from one season to the next and until they do it will be a team that continues to live down to everyone's expectations.

that should about sum it up.
