This is nothing new. It goes back at least through the entire Garrett era. The team is in a position to win the game, but fundamental understanding of how to win, how manage late game situations, executing, and proper decision making is missing from this franchise.
The best teams have this down to an art. The Cowboys , after all of these years, granted with different coaches and players, still haven’t figured it out.
Until somebody takes charge and understands that this is the missing ingredient for this team, we are going to continue to see this team give away games that they’re in prime position to win. It’s obvious, McCarthy has absolutely no idea how to close out a game. That means Dak is going to have to take the reins and control late game situations if we want to see an improvement. Think of how Peyton Manning basically used to be the head coach of the team in late game situations, often times overruling the head coach, that’s what needs to happen here.
As an aside, Dan Quinn also has no idea how to close out games. That’s obvious from his time in Atlanta, and he did nothing on that last drive to try and win the game. He let Brady dictate that final drive. IMO, I would have liked to see Quinn more aggressive.
I don’t know when this franchise will learn that they don’t know how to win. Until then, we will continue to give away games and talk about what ifs.
