Union willing to take joint legal action with Commanders

The NFL Players Association is willing to take joint legal action with the Washington Commanders against the league aimed at retrieving some of the salary cap space that the team lost last year when it was penalized by the NFL, two people familiar with the situation said Saturday.

But the union and the Commanders have not discussed such an effort, the two people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic. According to one of those people, the Commanders are not interested in such joint legal action because they do not support the union’s allegation that the league and teams improperly colluded to restrict players’ salaries in the sport’s season without a salary cap in 2010.

Legal action by the Commanders over their salary cap reduction, without the union, remains a possibility, that person said, without indicating whether Tuesday’s opening of the NFL free agent market is a deadline for the team to take such a step. But it’s not clear what the team will do.

This is pretty much win/win for us. We can sit back and watch, and if they win, we get some cap space back. If they lose, they are still 18 million in the hole.

How could the NFLPA sign off on the penalty and then sue the League over the same penalty? Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

The Skins aren't sueing about collusion which is what the NFLPA wants. If the Skins decided to sue it would be for being penalized for following the rules as set forth by the rules of the NFL and the CBA of that year. In no way do the Skins want accuse the rest of the owners of collusion. Indirectly thay may bring interest from outside parties to the possibility of collusion but that would not be what their suit would be based on. I doubt the Skins do anything though.

Yeah, that was my initial reaction.

I guess though it was like a hostage situation and the player's union had to make a choice and chose the greater good (increased cap for everyone) and sacrificed the Commanders/Cowboys. (Yes, I just compared the the NFL to terrorists...hah)

I don't like what the union did, but I do understand the position they were put in.

Probably following the same logic that allowed the NFL to sign off on the contracts only to be penalized for it later...

Bruce Allen just finished speaking a few minutes ago and basically implied he thought that some other teams saw the Commanders with cap room and trading up for RG3 and wanted to cripple them.

He didn't come out and directly accuse them but he specifically pointed out the position the team was in with the cap and just trading up then when asked about it directly he wouldn't say he didn't believe it.

Also it seems to me he thinks about as much of the NFLPA as he does the league itself. Holds them equally responsible.

Said they never considered a lawsuit.

Someone asked Mike Shanahan if because of the penalties were there any teams late in the season you enjoyed beating more than others and he grinned really big and said "The answer is yes."
