Kind of off any tangential Cowboys topic ... up late tonite and Gale Sayers was the interview on the maybe-somewhat-spare late-nite Tim McCarver (famous BB catcher) show.
I was just fascinated by the interview and the intelligence and great interview of this guy .. he's about 65 but he's just as quick thinking as he used to run, and could pass to the ladies maybe 15-20 years younger at the clubs, I was shocked... very little ego, but honest about how great he was and great conversation... why don't we hear more from him?
Sayers just was a lightning bolt unlike anything in his era, no one is more exciting to watch run in the open field EVER on film .... (yeah, ha, like there is an "open field" in the NFL these days) ... and his brief (68 games he sez) career coincided with the beginning of instant replay ... as a kid I was lucky could watch and marvel at his "artistry" over and over.
Bob Hayes is about the only other player who just overwhelmed his era. Hayes was thunder but Sayers was lightning. Jim Brown was an irresistible force, but not so fun to watch ....
Sayers said George Halas forbid his RBs from lifting weights, as a consequence he, Sayers, was very susceptible to ACL injuries from his crazy cutting style/ability, took lots of hits from the side .. if he had been able to do strength training, he might have lasted 5-plus more years he opined.
Yeah I want to buy G. Sayers a beer. I thought he might be in a assisted living center somewhere but he's looking like he's just getting started ...
To young guys today, I can't explain the excitement of Sayers in the open field. The game was a little slower so there was the thing called "elusive" .. just amazing to watch .. there were places to run sideline-to-sideline unlike today ...
(OT will the NFL surface ever be expanded into the wider CFL field? Dang it there's no chance .. the bigger CFL field wouldn't fit into NFL stadiums now ...)
