I never really understood the notion of RKG but I think I'm finally getting it. It's not about criminal history or past. It's more about passion, aggressiveness and being a team player. That's why I think Rolando McClain is a definite keeper. His numbers aren't amazing but he does a lot more for the team than the numbers show. I agree that Bruce Carter is way more talented than guys like Hitchens and Durant, but what I've learned over the past year is that talent isn't always what's best for the team. We replaced guys like Ware and Hatcher with Mincey and Crawford and the defense got much better. As talented as Carter is, I just don't see him staying here. He's inconsistent and I still don't trust his passion. I want guys like McClain and Lee who will inspire others with their passion, and I want guys like Durant and Hitchens who will inspire others with their hard work and humility.
Yes, I've always thought RKG meant guys that are focused on football as their top priority. There can be guys that never get in trouble but are not RKGs. I'm never sure where the line is on borderline character guys, but with 53 players on a roster you're inevitably going to have to deal with some guys that are borderline off-the-field as long as they are dedicated to football. Michael Irvin comes to mind. He was a borderline character issue guy, but was the hardest working guy on the team.
