According to Overthecap.com, the Cowboys have 25 players who may enter some kind of free agency. Five of those 25 are a type of Restricted Free Agents (RFA), 17 are Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs), and 3 are Voided Year Contracts, which is a fancy way of saying their contract has expired. The team has some big decisions to make on these players.

Here are the UFAs on the Cowboys roster, meaning they can choose their destination based on an offer from any team:
  • QB Trey Lance
  • QB Cooper Rush
  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • P Brian Anger
  • CB Jourdan Lewis
  • DL Linval Joseph
  • CB CJ Goodwin
  • LB Eric Kendricks
  • LS Trent Sieg
  • DL Osa Odighizhua
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • LB Nick Vigil
  • DL Carl Lawson
  • DL Carlos Watkins
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • S Israel Mukuamu
Restricted Free Agents
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat
Void Contracts (Expiring)
  • OL Zack Martin
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence
  • WR Brandin Cooks
Typically, the Cowboys spend their FA off-season money on their own players, so I expect several key players to be re-signed, and a few key players to price the Cowboys out of the market.

So who do we keep and let go?

  • QB Cooper Rush
  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • P Brian Anger
  • CB Jourdan Lewis
  • LB Eric Kendricks
  • DL Osa Odighizhua
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • LB Nick Vigil
  • DL Carl Lawson
Restricted Free Agents

  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat
Void Contracts (Expiring)

  • DL Demarcus Lawrence

This is my list of guys Dallas will try to re-sign.

Rush offers a safe backup to Dak. Knows the system.
Dowdle next contract $$$ went up due to how he ended the year. A lot? No, but definitely could get more than a 1 year min contract.
Anger would be nice to keep, not sure if he wants to follow Bones/Titans punter situation.
Lewis is a dependable slot corner
Kendricks played well, curious to see who our DC is and if Eric wants to stay or only came for Zimmer.
Osa I think leaves, but they will put out a honest offer.
If Osa walks, I think they'll keep Goldston to a deal similar to the one Armstrong re-signed here 3 years ago.
Vigil was solid depth, but a Zimmer guy.
Lawson provided depth at edge. Worth keeping.

RFA all get tendered.

Could see them wanting Law back on a short term deal. Could make it incentive based like Tyron Smith. Availability/stats/awards/playoffs

Thank you. I was thinking of this yesterday for several reasons.
Time to start looking at FA, even if many feel the team will not participate.

And to have a different topic other than the ones with constant negativity, not that this one will not turn into one of those.

I will need to think on this a few minutes to "give my thoughts".

I was looking forward to some turnover from some of these guys.

But with Schottenheimer back, I fully expect them to bring back several guys for safety and knowing his system.

Turpin is an absolute must keep.

I'd look to retain Anger (I don't want to piss him off), Lewis, Lawson and Hoffman too.

Kendricks is a maybe. Possibly Dowdle but only if he's dirt cheap.

You can flush the rest.

These are the ones I would keep.
  • QB Cooper Rush
  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • P Brian Anger
  • CB Jourdan Lewis
  • CB CJ Goodwin
  • LB Eric Kendricks
  • LS Trent Sieg
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • DL Carl Lawson
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • S Israel Mukuamu
Restricted Free Agents

  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas

They usually keep about half of their own FA's, though they did not follow that last year as much. But were close.

  • QB Trey Lance - Give him an offer, or if not, they best draft a QB, mid rounds, as we know no QB will be here to challenge.
  • QB Cooper Rush - will be back as the back up QB to compete with
  • RB Rico Dowdle - please do not give him a huge contract, he can be back, but need to draft a RB high in the draft. Let him test the FA market.
  • P Brian Anger - sign
  • CB Jourdan Lewis - sign, and he wants to stay here, a team friendly deal here
  • DL Linval Joseph - move on
  • CB CJ Goodwin - he will be back
  • LB Eric Kendricks - sign, but look for his replacement as well
  • LS Trent Sieg - sign
  • DL Osa Odighizhua - he will get offers, hopefully Jerry will match if not outrageous, or will Jerry panic sign, after losing others last year, that played well.
  • OL Chuma Edoga - move on
  • DL Chauncey Goldstone - move on
  • LB Nick Vigil - this is the type of player they will bring back for a 2 year low offer deal
  • DL Carl Lawson - move on
  • DL Carlos Watkins -move on
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye - he showed some promise, bring him back
  • S Israel Mukuamu - move on, but they will not.
Restricted Free Agents
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin - tender, make offer, and sign. And do that for all 5 players.
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat - well, maybe not under him an offer. He has been here what, 3 years, and has not made an impact, rather bring back Golston,
Void Contracts (Expiring)
  • OL Zack Martin - let him retire, would he be a progress stopper at this point
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence - time to move on, another injury waiting to happen
  • WR Brandin Cooks - need to find a WR to replace him, move on

I believe Goodwin follows Fassel to the Titans

I believe Goodwin follows Fassel to the Titans
Could be. But he has made a pretty good living in the DFW area, playing ST's. Not sure what his family situation is. So would he want to leave.
Yes, depends on the contract of course.

The biggest story is all 3 expiring contract players are gone .

Which probably dictates where our priorities will be in the draft .

And will be keep one of our backup QB’s.

  • QB Trey Lance - try to resign on a minimum contract
  • QB Cooper Rush - might actually get a better offer elsewhere. I'd like to keep him though.
  • RB Rico Dowdle - Another guy I'd like to keep but not for much money. I see his replacement coming in the draft.
  • P Brian Anger - Can stay or go.
  • CB Jourdan Lewis - It'd be nice to retain especially with our injury issues at CB
  • DL Linval Joseph
  • CB CJ Goodwin - Just a ST guy.
  • LB Eric Kendricks - Probably was just here for Zimmer
  • LS Trent Sieg
  • DL Osa Odighizhua - I'd like to keep this guy. He shows up big sometimes but then also disappears for long stretches though.
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • LB Nick Vigil
  • DL Carl Lawson
  • DL Carlos Watkins
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • S Israel Mukuamu
Restricted Free Agents
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin - A must keep guy.
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat
Void Contracts (Expiring)
  • OL Zack Martin
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence - No desire to bring him back unless it's on the cheap. He missed most of the year and I don't feel it had much of an impact.
  • WR Brandin Cooks - Bye.

There is no point spending much on free agents this off season. The NFC is the eight home game conference next season. The NFC East plays both the divisions that put three teams in the playoffs this season. Only the NFCE division winner is likely going to the playoffs next year. Who can the Cowboys sign that realistically gives them the chance of leap frogging both Washington and Philadelphia? First year head coach. Starting quarterback coming off an injury.

Cowboys might be better off considering a long range plan.

Here are the UFAs on the Cowboys roster, meaning they can choose their destination based on an offer from any team:
  • QB Trey Lance - bye bye...what a waste of money
  • QB Cooper Rush - if he signs for 3M a year
  • RB Rico Dowdle - if he signes for 3-4M a year
  • P Brian Anger - Keeper, but at reasonable price.
  • CB Jourdan Lewis - I would love to keep him. he is a fighter, but how much will he want
  • DL Linval Joseph - bye bye
  • CB CJ Goodwin - bye bye
  • LB Eric Kendricks - bye bye
  • LS Trent Sieg - keeper. shouldn't cost more than a couple M a year.
  • DL Osa Odighizhua - oh, boy. would love to keep him, but no more than 20M a year.
  • OL Chuma Edoga - bye bye
  • DL Chauncey Goldston - hmmm, about 5-7M a year is worth it.
  • LB Nick Vigil - bye bye
  • DL Carl Lawson - bye bye
  • DL Carlos Watkins - bye bye
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye - bye bye
  • S Israel Mukuamu - bye bye
Restricted Free Agents
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin - should keep for another year.
  • S Marquese Bell - if he is cheap. he is not a difference maker. just good depth.
  • OL Brock Hoffman - he should be competing for starting job at guard.
  • S Juanye Thomas - bye bye
  • DL Tyrus Wheat - bye bye
Void Contracts (Expiring)
  • OL Zack Martin - Thank you for your play over the years. future HOFer, time to hang it up.
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence - see ya. go sit on the bench somewhere else.
  • WR Brandin Cooks - would he sign for a vet minimum?

Several thoughts on which UFAs I would keep:
  • Cooper Rush - may actually get a better offer to be someone else’s backup but he probably stays.
  • Brian Anger- one of the league‘s best. Keep.
  • Jourdan Lewis - even at 29 still has something. Slot corners are not easy to find.
  • Rico Dowdle- would try to keep but he’s probably going to get a much better deal somewhere else. He was so disrespected here lastbyear at beginning of year, I doubt he stays.
  • Osa Odighizhua- I wou,d try to keep him but he will be too expensive. Cowboys are too cheap.
The RFAs like Turpin and Brock Hoffman will likely be kept because it’s harder for other teams to outbid the original team. But as cheap as we are it’s possible.

Remember they will be getting many players back that was on IR.
However, will Diggs and Overshown be ready for game 1. Doubtful. They will probably start the season on PUP.

So yeah, they have a lot of long range plans to consider. Butat the same time, they could field a competitive team.
We do not know how the other teams will be, or how they will be effected in FA. A lot of players could get better offers, or want a lot more money, so either their salary cap is impacted or they lose players.

I was looking forward to some turnover from some of these guys.

Yeah we need turnover big time. I honestly wouldn't be mad if we let them all walk. Maybe keep some guys who we give 1 year contracts to. I don't trust Jerry and company to resign someone longer than 1 year that will offer value to us. We always end up overpaying for our own talent.

Probably the saddest thing from this list is that there isn't even one player that stands out as irreplaceable. This list is half the team and yet almost all could turn over and no one would notice.
Which keeping a good part of these guys is ok. Need to have a group of core / role players on the team.
Can't have a superstar of 53. Though many fans on here think we do.
And this is the same for all teams, every year.

What goes wrong here is the lack of bringing in other FA's. Not the lower level cheap one year prove it deals as they wrongly like to do.
And they do not need to break the bank (what little they have left in it) to get the best FA. Though if a difference maker to get them over the top would be great for once.
Just sign a few upper lever to mid level guys. Then continue to draft well. Which has been debatable lately.

There's no way in hell I'd resign Rush. Resign Lance. If Dak gets hurt again I want boom or bust not treadmill
