According to Overthecap.com, the Cowboys have 25 players who may enter some kind of free agency. Five of those 25 are a type of Restricted Free Agents (RFA), 17 are Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs), and 3 are Voided Year Contracts, which is a fancy way of saying their contract has expired. The team has some big decisions to make on these players.

Here are the UFAs on the Cowboys roster, meaning they can choose their destination based on an offer from any team:
  • QB Trey Lance
  • QB Cooper Rush
  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • P Brian Anger
  • CB Jourdan Lewis
  • DL Linval Joseph
  • CB CJ Goodwin
  • LB Eric Kendricks
  • LS Trent Sieg
  • DL Osa Odighizhua
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • LB Nick Vigil
  • DL Carl Lawson
  • DL Carlos Watkins
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • S Israel Mukuamu
Restricted Free Agents
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat
Void Contracts (Expiring)
  • OL Zack Martin
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence
  • WR Brandin Cooks
Typically, the Cowboys spend their FA off-season money on their own players, so I expect several key players to be re-signed, and a few key players to price the Cowboys out of the market.

So who do we keep and let go?
They will keep all the RFA and ERFA, which are Hoffman, Wheat and Juanyeh Thomas. Expiring contracts all will be gone, although they might try to resign Lawrence to a friendly deal.

The free agents they should consider are:
Dowdle - only if they can sign him to a friendly deal. OTC says his value is $8m. No way we will pay near that. If resigned it should be a 3 year deal for something like 10m total. He is part of a rotation, not a lead back.
Lewis - I have a feeling he is gonna want to go somewhere where he can play for a Super Bowl, but if not, we will probably need a 8-10m a year deal. He is among the best nickle corners in the league.
Gholston - He probably will deserve a contract in the range of what we paid Dorrance Armstrong, somewhere around 6m a year.
Osa - He is the highest rated DT in free agency, even if not put in the top tier overall he is likely to get $15-20m a year.
Lawson - OTC says 2-3m a year, sounds right for a rotation guy.
Mukuamu - OTC says $2-3m, sounds about right
Kendricks - OTC says $12m, no chance in hell anyone is paying that for him. He played for $3m last year, we should not pay him any more than that.

I would love to see us take a run at DT Wharton from KC or Kinlaw from the Jets with the money we would use on Osa. They fit the run defense profile but also get a bit of pass rush.

Turpin
Anger
Lawson
Hoffman
Thomas
Lawrence

I’m interested in keeping those guys depending on their contract. Turpin, Anger and Hoffman being the most important.

Probably the saddest thing from this list is that there isn't even one player that stands out as irreplaceable. This list is half the team and yet almost all could turn over and no one would notice.
Its like last year where no one was worth the money it would take to resign them, but we didn’t replace them with anyone better.

Prime example this year is Osa. He isn’t good enough to pay what he will get on the open market, but he’s the best we have at DT. Our FO always paints itself into a corner where we will have to overpay to keep him or be left needing two starting DTs.

Definitely a quantity over quality situation this year.

First, you let all the DTs walk. No need for those. That was evident yesterday. You win with using high capital on corners (in a league where the rules don’t let them make much of an impact). Forget the DL, we’ll just cover em all day. Coach Jerry’ll tell ya.

I would actually try to keep Lance. Seriously. Dak is likely to miss time and you may as well gamble on his upside over trying to win meaningless games with Rush.

Too many examples of guys for which it took a little while to catch on. I’m no fan but it’s the best bet for this team at this time. I’d try to get him for something like 3/12, but he may get more offers than you’d think.

Keep:
  • QB Trey Lance
  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • CB Jourdan Lewis
  • DL Osa Odighizhua
  • LB Nick Vigil
  • DL Carl Lawson
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • WR/KR Kevantae Turpin
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • DL Demarcus Lawrence
  • WR Brandin Cooks

Bye bye:
  • QB Cooper Rush
  • P Brian Anger
  • DL Linval Joseph
  • CB CJ Goodwin
  • LB Eric Kendricks
  • LS Trent Sieg
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Chauncey Goldston
  • LB Nick Vigil

  • DL Carlos Watkins
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye
  • S Israel Mukuama
  • S Marquese Bell
  • OL Brock Hoffman
  • S Juanye Thomas
  • DL Tyrus Wheat
  • OL Zack Martin

..keep cooks if cheap. Resign Osa and Kendricks. Kendricks might have another good year in him.

Everyone else? Meh, .. Lance and Rush are quite expendable.

  • LS Trent Sieg - who?
  • DL Osa Odighizhua. - Keep if not too expensive......Can't replace the whole DL in one offseason
  • OL Chuma Edoga. - See ya
  • DL Chauncey Goldston - Micah's buddy. Use as leverage
  • LB Nick Vigil - who?
  • DL Carl Lawson - Naw. We got Sam Williams coming back
  • DL Carlos Watkins - buh bye
  • CB Amani Oruwarlye - who?
  • S Israel Mukuamu - why was he still on the team?
Restricted Free Agents

I'd expect more turnover than usual given two brand new coordinators coming in. If Eberflus is the guy I would fully expect OSA to be brought back. Outside of that I'm not very confident in them brining back may of our defendres. 13 Bears defenders are hitting FA this offseason. I would study that list as you might see them go after a Darrell Taylor guy to replace Golston for less money.

Offensively I'm very interested to see what these RFAs end up commanding. Both Turpin and Hoffman I could see being more expensive than people realize, and may price their way out of Dallas. Similar for Dowdle. I'd love to bring him back at a cheap price tag, but I bet someone will pay him legitimate starter money.

A general rule of thumb regarding free agents: About 90% of the time if you can get a FA “cheap” there’s a good reason usually centering on that player not being in high demand.

I would love to keep Osa but he’s good enough he’s going to get a “market deal” meaning he’s going to get paid what the going rate is. Good DTs are hard to find and priced accordingly.

None of this matters...this team is not a .500 team with this clown show.

With so much money invested in the starting QB I'm not also paying the backup so I think Rush walks. Too many other holes that need to be filled at this point. As far as the rest goes stephen will be handing out small contracts so whomever wants to come back for nothing will be back. Rico Gholston, osa, and lewis might be too expensive.

I suspect that they will sign Lance. It looks like they will have to sign more free agents this year to fill up the roster. I'd guess that around 10 rookies will make the team and the rest would come from free agents and trades

COOKS NEEDS TO GO...shouldn't have been signed in the first place!!!!!!!!!! In 2023 we were bottom 5....now we are one of the bottom two WR corps in the NFL.

Why would they sign Trey Lance? What’s the point?
