Just checked today's SD newpaper to find out what was going on out there because I hoped to find info on status of Brian Stewart, who Phillips wants bring to Dallas as our DC. First off there no mention of Stewart, direclty or indirectly, in several sports articles on Chargers' search for HC. Following gives you a flavor they going thru same motions we did. I'm hoping for relatively quick hire and that somehow SD allows Stewart (if he wants) to leave for Dallas as our new DC:

First off Buddy Ryans son Rex Ryan was interviewed in Thursday as was Norv Turner and both obviously want the job. Chargers owner Spanos taking real beating from media re his insipid handling of problem between L.V. Smith & Shottenheimer and only stepping in at almost last minute to "resolve" problem. Looks like Spanos acting essentially result of Chargers' losing both their OC and DC since latter (Phillips to Dallas) was apparently main candidate for SD HC if Shottenheimer had been let go earlier. Anyway the loss of so many of their coaches essentially brought this whole problem to the forefront.

BTW speculation by Charger media includes Jimmy Johnson and Cowher (Charger can forget both of them) as well as California's Pete Carroll and Florida's Urban Meyer. But there was concern mentioned whether GM L.V.Smith would ever cede necessary power to get any of these guys. Don't know if any other coaches were interviewed beyond Ryan & Turner; maybe Riveria also interviewed but if so no mention today.

I don't think that Stewart has enough experience to be HC right now. A promotion to DC would be a big enough step.

By the way, it's A.J. Smith. :p:
