Utah RB limps through pro day … Injured Utah RB Devontae Booker held a private pro day at a high school in California attended by reps from as many as 18 NFL teams. Booker was unable to participate in either the combine or Utah’s regular pro day after having a torn MCL surgically repaired in February and hoped to be at full speed today. However, Booker is currently still only back to around 70-75% and as a result did not run or do any other physical tests or field drills other than catch a few passes. Expectations are that Booker will be ready for training camp, but the fact that he appears to be way behind on his rehab is likely going to cost him at the draft. The GBN currently rates him as the 3rd best RB in this year’s draft and the 70th prospect overall.

I hadn't read this before, Booker was my favorite for our pick at 67. Now I hope he drops to the 6th round and we take Dixon or Prossie in the 3rd instead. Booker in the 6th with a year on IR would still be a steal and DMC is probably gone after this season.

Representatives from 18 NFL teams -- including running backs coaches from the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks -- made their way to Grant Union High School in Sacramento, Calif., for the pro-day workout of Utah running back Devontae Booker.

Booker -- 5-foot-11, 219 pounds -- is still recovering from Feb. 9 surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Booker is 70 percent back to normal, but was not able to perform any of the runs or jumps at his personal pro day. He did, however, run some pass routes at about 75 percent of his usual speed. Booker is said to have great hands, and it is believed that he will be ready for full participation once NFL training camps open in July.

Drew Boylhart (The Huddle Report) PARAPHRASED...

Devontae Booker RB Utah

STRENGTHS
He has excellent overall athletic ability, and enough talent to play his position at a very high level. He's a good blocker and can catch the ball. He can catch screens out of the backfield, as well as going down the field. He can also be used as a slot receiver. He's a one-cut back with some explosion and good leg strength. He consistently gets extra yards by falling forwards when tackled. He has good feet, balance, and burst, which gets him to full speed quickly. Devontae reminds me a lot of Buccaneers running back Doug Martin.

CONCERNS
He runs hard, but he lacks lateral agility This means he will be a "system" running back. He's a one-cut downhill runner, so he'll thrive in a zone blocking scheme. He excels at running between the tackles. However, he can occasionally bounce outside or run sweeps. He is not shifty enough to make yards in open space. He's not going to consistently make defenders miss, because he lacks agility. He also runs a bit upright. Upright runners that lack lateral agility have a history of struggling to stay healthy. His lack of lateral agility also shows up when asked to pass block. He's a willing pass blocker, but he struggles to do so.

TALENT BOARD ROUND ?
In the right system, Devontae can become an impact running back. But, he has to stay healthy and he has to be in the right system. Devontae is a tough kid, and a tough runner. But, he'll struggle staying healthy, because of his upright running style and lack of lateral agility to protect himself. If he stays healthy, and plays in the right system, he could impact. He has the talent to be an impact RB, but be careful which round you draft him in. He plays a position that's notorious for injuries, and his style of running compounds that concern.

Scratch this guy from the draft board. Unless a player is a potential 'Elite' then please don't mess with anymore injured guys.

That's pretty much our M.O. though.

One guy in this draft is worth taking a risk on even with his awful injury and that's Jaylon Smith. Booker is off my board if I am in the war room.
