Roster thoughts...

There are currently 9 rookies on the roster (including Jaylon Smith on Reserve/NFI) and another 5 on the Practice Squad.

Ezekiel Elliott (21) is the youngest, followed by Smith and Maliek Collins (our 1st, 2nd and 3rd rd picks).

There are currently 28 players on the roster (Active, Reserve/Suspended, Reserve/NFI) who are age 25 or younger.

There are 7 players age 30 or older.

There are 34 players age 26 or older (Active, Reserve/PUP, Reserve/Injured, Reserve/NFI, Reserve/DNR).

Of these 34 players, 19 are possibilities to get churned before next season because of free agency, injury, age, production and/or price.

The 19.

1. QB Tony Romo (36) - He's coming back, but his health is always going to be a concern
2. OT Doug Free (32) - 2017 is last year of contract and could be pushed by Chaz Green, possible pay cut to stay if loses job
3. CB Brandon Carr (30) - will be an unrestricted free agent after this season
4. LB Justin Durant (30) - unlikely to make it through this season if asked to play legit snaps
5. QB Mark Sanchez (29) - added because of Romo's injury, may not last entire season
6. RB Darren McFadden (29) - on Reserve/NFI, may not be needed when cleared to return, last year of contract
7. OT Cameron Bradford (28) - is listed on IR but was given an injury settlement, he's gone
8. NT Terrell McClain (28) - injury-prone player the coaches like and playing for a new contract, let him go and draft a NT to groom
9. SS Barry Church (28) - coaching fav in final year of contract, could re-sign but we need to get younger and better here
10. DE/DT Jack Crawford (27) - good reserve player in final year of contract, could return if no big offers are made
11. G Ronald Leary (27) - will leave as unrestricted free agent for starting job elsewhere
12. LB Andrew Gachkar (27) - last year of contract, unlikely to be re-signed
13. QB Kellen Moore (27) - currently on IR, could come back next off-season as fav of Scott Linehan
14. CB Josh Thomas (27) - currently on IR, chance he might go to camp again next year
15. LB Rolando McClain (27) - currently on Reserve/DNR as team wants to get some money back, he's cooked
16. CB Morris Claiborne (26) - playing on one year "prove it" deal and is finally healthy
17. RB Lance Dunbar (26) - playing on one year "prove it" deal, awesome recovery from horrific knee injury
18. WR Brice Butler (26) - final year of contract and auditioning to take over as the #2
19. WR Terrance Williams (26) - final year of contract and looking to cash in as free agent

I think "homegrown" is often easily linked to long-term success. As I keep this number over the years, it has been encouraging to see it grow. And here, with 31 draft picks and 10 college free agents who have never played anywhere in the NFL but Dallas, the Cowboys have 41 homegrown players, which puts them into the top third of the league.
