Updates on Dwyer, Morgan and Thomas

Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas had surgery on Sunday, according to his facebook page. He posted on Sunday night/Monday morning that it went well. Thomas broke his foot last Tuesday during a training drill. He will miss this week’s NFL Combine, as well as Tech’s pro day in mid-March. He’s been steadily rising up the boards of most NFL draft analysts.
If I were a NFL GM or in some sort of talent-evaluating role, I’m not sure I could pass on Thomas if I needed a wide receiver. He’s big (6-3). He’s fast (4.38 in the 40-yard). He can block. He’s strong. And, with two exceptions last year, he can catch. Braylon Edwards drops more passes that in one series. The thing I like about Thomas is he’s physical, but not clumsy.

Jonathan Dwyer said he has lost about 17 pounds since he arrived at Michael Johnson training facility in the Dallas area in mid-January. He’s betwee 220-225 now, which is where he said he wants to be. He said he feels like he’s a half-step quicker.
I asked him how long it took him to get used to being 7 yards behind center, instead of the 3 yards he was in spread-option. I joked did he flinch the first couple of times he took a snap and took a couple of steps, because that’s usually when he was making contact with defensive linemen. He laughed and said it only took a few snaps for him to get used to lining up in the spot that RBs go in a pro-style offense. After all, as he pointed out, it’s where lined up all but two years of his playing career.

Derrick Morgan said he’s spent a lot of time at the API Camp in Arizona (which is where Thomas trains) working on technique and improving his results in the drills that he will be tested on at the combine.
I asked him if spending all this time working on these drills before he gets to the Indy felt like cheating. What if he gets there and they’ve changed the drills.
He laughed and said he guesses he’s out of luck if that’s the case.

Something Morgan Burnett told me last week, that I forgot to include in my post, is how much he’s missed his family and little boy, also named Morgan, while he’s been in Orlando working out.
Burnett is probably the biggest question mark of Tech’s underclassmen. Some analysts say he’ll go in the first round if he clocks a good 40 at the combine. Others have him rated, much, much lower with no reason given.
