I dislike refs, especially whenever they make a call I don’t like. They have a crappy job and they’re not always right. However, if they are right, they should get credit for it.

Dallas committed 11 penalties against the Browns. Here are the videos (in Windows Media Player format for downloads) of each foul and my overall grade for week 1.

Click on the pic for the replay:

False Start

……

* Flozell Adams & Marc Colombo

The false starts keep a-coming. Hopefully, the offensive line can keep those to only one or two per game.

Illegal Use of Hands

* Orlando Scandrick, covering the slot receiver

Scandrick’s penalty was a rookie mistake which shouldn't (edit) resurface often.

Offside

* Tank Johnson

Tank has got to make sure of any movement before the snap since he’s lined up over the ball at nose.

Pass Interference

……

* Adam Jones & Terrell Owens

Adam still has some rust to work through, but that’ll correct itself soon enough. Owens’ call was questionable, but the refs will call that most of the time if his arm is extended.

Illegal Formation

* Tony Curtis

There’s no excuse for Curtis covering up Columbo. No doubt, Houck will have that one beaten out of him during practice this week. I doubt that he’ll repeat that dumb mistake anytime soon.

Holding

…… ……

* Cory Proctor, Leonard Davis & Flozell Adams

For offensive lineman, there’s always some holding during every game, but Adams and Davis were flat out tackling players. In comparison, Proctor’s effort was simply embarrassing.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

* Terrell Owens

According to the rule, it’s unsportsmanlike conduct. It will be called every time, so it’s a voluntary foul. However, it didn’t affect the outcome of the game.

My final grade: Refs 11-for-11. A-
Next up: Eagles.

Nice post, but A+? You must work for the league.. The TO offensive PI call shouldn't have been made. Also, they missed ~2 roughing the passer calls.

I would say B/B+ tops, I am not going to go all out and say A+ just because we still won. I would be interested to know if there are any fines related to our game.

Yep. I'm Goodell.

Good point about the fouls they didn't call against Cleveland, but I'm looking at whether the actual calls against Dallas were good or bad. I do agree that the offensive pass interference call against Owens was questionable (edit) so A+ is a bit strong (edited the main post with an A-).

Fines are dispensed by mid-week, right? We should know if any were levied by tomorrow, I think.

Boy DallasEast that is a lot of work you did. I agree with you that the refs called a pretty good game.

Thanks. Hypnotoad's right about the non calls though. I may look at those during the next game IF they happen. Knowing the Eagles, they will try their best to throw haymakers at Romo should they penetrate the offensive line.

Yes, I think we should know by tomorrow.

Overall there was only really minor things to complain about.

An interesting off-topic factoid I thought about when reading your post. Joe Gibbs would always write long documents to the league whenever there are non-calls/bad calls. I remember hearing the announcers say it would be a long memo just for analysis sent to the league offices. I am not sure if other coaches do that, but by the middle of the season you start seeing phantom calls being made and pro-Commanders calls during Commanders games. Just thought I would share lol.

:laugh2: Good old Gibbs. I'm glad he's gone. :mad:

Again. :lmao:

I don't care what anyone says, TOs PI call was BS.

If it really was PI then Witten would have been called for the same thing on that route where he dropped the ball.

It was a bad call, plain and simple. The league will not admit but high-profile players have an extra eye put on them. For some its beneficiary, for others it is not.

Don't forget the screwing TO out of a TD part with loads of time to get the call from upstairs to review the play and nothing happening... I guess I hate this one the most because I would have liked those fantasy points :(

Interesting take. I'll look at both side-by-side later today.

Thanks. I thought of the idea during the preseason games. If nothing happens to prevent me from recording the games, I plan on doing so. That's not an easy decision to make because it will sometimes suck to agree with a ref, but it's also comforting to look at a called penalty that's bad and know that the video evidence contradicts their conclusion IF they don't reverse it.

That's another situation when a penalty wasn't called. I may end up doing something to address those during future games also.

This is the reason why this team has lost these playoff games under the Romo era.

Even with Parcells the claimed "disciplinarian"

We had too many penalties in our playoff loses. People wanna blame the defense Romos snap. Craytons catch blah blah blah. Really the main issue is penalties. Those games were so close. We accumulated close to 100yards in each of those games.
