Meyer rumored to be becoming Gators coach

Posted: 1 day ago
Ever since Florida ruled out Steve Spurrier's return, the focus has turned toward hot-shot Utah coach Urban Meyer as the man who might be able to resurrect the Gators.
And now it's rumored that Meyer already might have agreed to take over for Ron Zook in Gainesville.
Gator Country, a part of the Scout.com network of websites, is citing unnamed sources in reporting that Florida has reached an agreement with Meyer. The report says that an official announcement still isn't likely for a number of weeks, and it is not clear whether Meyer has even been offered a contract.
However, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley has issued a statement that he has not even talked to Meyer. Foley stated for the record that the report that Meyer has been hired is "1,000 percent false" and that the school will not even talk to coaches until the season is over Nov. 20.
Utah is 10-0 this season under Meyer, ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 and sixth in the BCS standings. If the Utes' BCS ranking holds, they'd become the first team from a non-BCS conference to make it into one of the big-money BCS bowls.
Meyer's success with Utah this season has kept his name on the front burner ever since Zook was fired Oct. 25. And the fact that Meyer was hired at Utah by Bernie Machen, who is now Florida's president, has also been cited as a strong reason why he might wind up in Gainesville.
Meyer, 40, earns $500,000 annually at Utah and has a contract that runs through 2009. Also: Full story at Gator Country
