USA Today: Top 5 overall No. 2 NFL draft picks... 2 'Boys

It's settled then... we need to trade up to the #2 pick in the draft and take Darren McFadden. :D

I almost posted that. :D

Seriously though, can you imagine how the boards would blow up if we did that deal today? We gave our first and three second rounders to move up to #2... Today people would be jumping off bridges if we did that for one player.

But I think it worked out okay in TD's case.

The difference is back then they had 12 rounds and you could bring a ton of free agents to camp. I imagine you could give up a bunch of picks and still recoup the talent lost in latter rounds due to the smaller number of teams.

With roster limits and limited draft picks, heck yeah, if they made a trade like that, I'd start looking for something to throw...something that would cause the least amount of damage, of course. :)

You can't take as many people to camp, but you can still get the same guys as undrafted FAs.

And I'd say that second rounders are *more* valuable now than back then, because today they're such good salary cap bargains.

It all depends on the player. If he's Tony D, it's great. If he's Ricky Bell, not so great.

Just saying... Tons of fans would have have erupted at what a "disaster" that trade was... Especially for zomg he's only 185 lbs!!!!

Only it turned out not to be. ;)

If I'm not mistaken, Minnesota was their major road block during those years.

We weren't bad enough in 1974 to merit the second pick in the '75 draft, so this must have been the result of the Craig Morton trade. Just think: Randy could have been wreaking havoc for the G-Men all those years. Shudder.

You know that was the plan, right? They thought he could be a Butkus-style MLB... Hence the #54.

I think the move back to DT worked out pretty well, though. :)

I wish the younger guys could've seen him play. The word "beast" gets tossed around way too often, but Randy really was one.

The Billy Waddy game in '79 stung even more considering we throttled them earlier in the season. Then again, our two regular season victories over the Giants last year guaranteed very little.

I see threads asking which game hurt most. I always see the Steelers Jackie Smith game, the 49ers The Catch game, the 49ers Irvin PI game, Colts O'Brien kick, even the Philly Danny NO! game but to this day, this is the won that kills me. If 100 years from now, this question were asked on this board, I'd probably get up from my grave and clack out a few strokes on the old computer advising how this game, above all others killed me.

:laugh2:

I hope I won't be charged as an accessory to murder. :)

The 12 round thing means nothing. You can still sign undrafted FAs, so that's meaningless.

And if we made that trade today and got another Tony D, it WOULD be worth it, BY FAR.

There are so many more teams now that there is not enough talent to go around. There used to be more teams than talent. And when you can bring 100 FAs to camp you do get some advantage in finding a raw jewel.

LA had the edge in 1975, definitely. But we were on a NYG-ish roll that postseason. The fact that we flat out dominated that game-- and again in '78--amazes me to this day. Charlie Waters turned in superhuman performances in most of them. The Billy Waddy game in '79 stung even more considering we throttled them earlier in the season. Then again, our two regular season victories over the Giants last year guaranteed very little.

I'm curious as to why we spent a first rounder on Morton in '65, considering that Meredith was still young and on top of his game. After all, Roger (then ensconced in Vietnam) was our insurance policy. Maybe it was a "highest guy left on our board" kind of deal. Or maybe Don had already taken a hellacious beating in his career.

Remember what defense we were in when Waddy scored?

Of the #1s there, I'd have to put Ricky Bell as the worst...especially when the next guy was Dorsett and played the same position. Ouch.

How was Ricky bell the worse the dude helped Tampa win it 1st ever playoff game his career was cut way short due to a disease not to mention his life
