A car belonging to Cowboys defensive tackle Maliek Collins was apparently involved in a crash over the weekend in Plano, TX. But as details continue to come together in the story, it now appears that Collins himself was not in the vehicle, or even in town, at the time of the wreck.

There was concern that #Cowboys DL Maliek Collins was in a car accident this weekend, but we are told by two Cowboys FO sources that it was Collins car, but his fmr teammate Charles Tapper, now with the Jets, was driving. Collins wasn’t in the car. No word yet on Tapper’s status.

Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan reported in a tweet Tuesday morning that Collins, the third-year starter out of Oklahoma, was in Miami when the accident took place, having loaned his car to Tapper.

Tapper was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2016 (the same draft class as Collins), but played in just two games for the team. He was recently signed to a futures contract with the New York Jets. As per Mike Leslie, Tapper’s status after the crash “isn’t believed to be of major concern, but we are waiting on full confirmation of that.”

According to The Fan, “police are investigating whether sobriety and/or falling asleep behind the wheel are involved here.”

Collins has recorded 10.5 sacks in his three years as a Cowboy.
