Now that the league is through the first wave of free agency, the Dallas Cowboys are going back to the days of old-style free agency, meeting with players who could help fill out their depth by kicking the tires on veterans face-to-face. In many cases, players make it to this stage in the process due to a myriad of issues, many times due to uncertain reliability due to injury histories.

On Monday, the Cowboys are meeting with former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb and also ex-Indianapolis safety Clayton Geathers. Both players bring different options for Dallas to look at, but both would flesh out a roster prior to the draft and free up the team to have fewer pressing needs come April.

Free agent S Clayton Geathers is visiting the Cowboys today, per source. He was a team captain for the Colts last season, starting 12 games and recording 89 tackles.

Cobb, 28, is entering his eighth campaign after being a second-round pick of Green Bay in the 2011 draft. As a former college quarterback, he has excelled as a slot specialist for the Packers for many of those seasons. His recent production in the last few years has been curtailed by concussion and hamstring issues.

Cobb has missed six different stretches of games due to injury over the last three seasons.

In his career as a receiver, he has totaled 5,524 yards and 41 touchdowns on 11.8 yards per catch over his career. He also took 59 handoffs for 352 yards. This versatility could get him on the field and provide value.

He averaged 9.3 yards on 89 punt returns to go along with 26 yards per kick return, though he hasn’t done the latter in several seasons.

The Cowboys are entertaining options in the slot due to the departure of Cole Beasley. There are contenders in Allen Hurns, Tavon Austin and red-shirt rookie Cedric Wilson, but none present the slot experience and sustained productivity of Cobb.

Geathers, 27 by Week 1, is a former fourth-round pick and team captain for the Colts who found some success in their secondary when available. He has fought through various injuries in the 2018 season to play and start in 12 contests, finishing with a career-high 86 tackles (one for loss) with two QB hits, three passes defended and a forced fumble. He also plays a good amount on special teams, which is an area the Cowboys are looking to bolster this year in addition to fueling competition at safety.

Where he would fit the Cowboys is as a strong safety option that can provide savvy and leadership without threatening the ascension of free safety Xavier Woods. The primary question surrounds his physical playing style that has led to his lengthy injury history where he has missed 23 games, 18 of which due to neck injury and subsequent surgeries.

The Colts did show interest in re-signing Geathers, but his injury history is being cited as a possible reason talks broke down.

On the surface, both players represent veteran savvy and check the leadership and character trait boxes. Now the question becomes if either or both can marry those traits with the Cowboys’ budget.
