The Dallas Cowboys have maintained a very low profile during the first 24 hours of the free agency legal tampering period. Unsurprisingly low, given their usual history of waiting things out; maddeningly low, according to many fans.

Over recent years, Cowboys fans have wondered aloud whether or not Dallas is still a premiere free agency destination as it once was when Jerry Jones used to throw money seemingly indiscriminately. A recent surevey says fans are underestimating the way the Cowboys now attract free agents. Nothing has changed, Dallas is still the NFL’s most-wanted destination.

Sports Illustrated’s Robert Klemko asked 15 NFL agents about which teams their clients would consider to be the most desirable and least desirable destinations. The agents each gave a Top 5 and a Bottom 5. Dallas received 11 top-5 votes, with no other team getting more than 8.

“Our runaway winner, the Dallas Cowboys, are said to ‘spare no expense’ when it comes to player luxuries,” Klemko writes. “‘They just treat the player first-rate,’ one agent said.”

Seattle, Miami, the Rams, and Atlanta rounded out the Top 5. Buffalo, Oakland, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Cleveland comprise the least-desirable locales, although SI.com’s MMQB article points out that the culture is changing quickly around the Browns’ facility.

The agents who were polled remained anonymous. There a ton of factors that might go into what makes one team more desirable than another. One agent told Klemko, “but we typically look at winning culture/tradition, opportunity [for playing time], income tax laws, market, area of the country, and sometimes weather.” And of course, what’s important to one player may not matter as much to another.

Klemko quotes another agent as saying, “It’s an interesting question because players don’t really know, so they just look at city and nightlife and a bunch of [expletive] that doesn’t matter.”

Still another said this: “I think most players take the most money regardless of location, as they should. But when it’s equal, that’s when this debate gets interesting.”

Dallas has world-class facilities at The Star in Frisco and AT&T Stadium, a storied tradition, agreeable weather, a major-city market, no income tax, and even an active nightlife to offer.

The Cowboys’ front office certainly has spare-no-expense money to spend. But for now, it seems, the team is happy to play hard to get and let other clubs spend truckloads of cash. And with every new blockbuster signing, there’s one more team who’s theoretically no longer in the market for the players remaining in the free agent pool. Maybe the Cowboys are banking on the idea that with fewer teams shopping, Dallas becomes just a bit more attractive to guys looking to land somewhere.
