Ezekiel Elliott is in the news, again, for the wrong reason in the off-season. This time, Elliott was handcuffed and released after (air quotes) “knocking down” a security staffer in Las Vegas at the Electric Daisy Carnival.

“TMZ” obtained the video, which we have here. It might not be the flop heard round the world, but it comes real close. And while many Dallas Cowboys fans are pointing to the severity of the fall as a reason to brush off the latest incident, nothing could be further from reality.

The reality is Elliott, 23, needs to be smarter. As a famous person who is always in the spotlight, Elliott needs to stay out of situations where he can give anyone the opportunity to benefit off of any misstep. Fair or not, mostly not, playing for the Cowboys and having past transgressions has placed a target on Elliott’s back.

The NFL railroaded Elliott when they handed down a six-game ban in his second season and they warned him that further involvement with law enforcement could lead to bigger suspensions in the future. This may not fall into that category because Elliott wasn’t arrested or charged, but it still isn’t a good look for a guy that doesn’t need this type of attention.

It might not seem like a big deal to us, but the league has their own rule book on how they hand out their punishment and a player doesn’t need to be charged to be suspended. The Cowboys and Elliott have certainly learned this the hard way before, it’s not wise to test the league office.

Elliott still hasn’t learned his lesson; he needs to stop putting himself in position to be scrutinized over every minor incident. He needs to make better choices when he’s out in public. Whether or not he had been drinking is unconfirmed, but he found himself in a late-night situation where security became involved. Parts of that scenario fall on his decision making.

It might not be fair, but this is the life Elliott’s made for himself. As a prominent football player and as a recognizable face, Elliott has to be extra careful to stay out of harm’s way, something he still fails to realize sometimes.

Saying that Elliott barely touched the guy or what happened is being blown out of proportion misses the point entirely. Elliott cannot put himself in situations that are left to interpretation, he needs to be smarter.
