The Cowboys take on the Philadelphia Eagles for the first time in 2019 Sunday night. Both squads sit at 3-3 tied for first place in the NFC East, with the winner taking over sole possession of the division.

This matchup has been a Sunday Night Football staple over the past three seasons. The Cowboys have won 2 of 3 Sunday night matchups, both coincidentally being 29-23 victories in overtime. There’s no reason to think that this matchup won’t be equally as thrilling as the previous contests.

The Cowboys are hurt, banged up, and in the midst of a three-game losing streak. They are coming off a 24-22 defeat at the hands of the then winless New York Jets in which the Cowboys fell behind early and clawed their way back only to fail short at the very end. It’s the third consecutive week that this pattern has occurred and it is something the team must fix, and fast.

The troubling thing is that it has been a rotating cast of characters shouldering the blame for these losses. However, the main takeaway is that the majority of the issues are self-inflicted. A drop here, a drop there. A holding penalty here, an illegal formation penalty there.

Of course, all of these mistakes seem to occur at the most inopportune times, generally on third downs or on spots on the field that cost the Cowboys points. If the Cowboys can stop shooting themselves in the foot then they stand a much better chance at winning this game.

Now with the uncertainty over which players might return to the lineup and just how effective will they be? It would be a great time to feature Ezekiel Elliott.

In two games against the Eagles in 2018, Elliott had 65 touches for 379 yards and two touchdowns. If the Cowboys can get Elliott going early then they can utilize play-action and the straight-line speed of the receivers they have like Tavon Austin to torch what has been a porous Eagle’s secondary. While the Eagle’s defensive backs may have size they do not possess the speed needed to prevent the big play. As long as Prescott is given time in the pocket he has shown he can make those throws.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys must continue making improvements in gap discipline. The Eagles love to use a combination of Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders, and Darren Sproles (If healthy) to get the matchups they want, especially if it involves a linebacker. The defense must keep everything in front of them and cannot allow another 90+ yard touchdown like they did against the Jets the previous week.

If they can pressure Carson Wentz and make him pay for holding onto the ball coupled with taking the ball away then the Cowboys can emerge victoriously.

If not, then the team will have a lot of questions heading into the bye week.
