The Dallas Cowboys are in regular season mode, even with the regular season just a few weeks away. After their business trip to beautiful Hawaii, the club returned home to the great state of Texas and has now locked in to their regular season routine. Tuesday was the first press conference of the season at The Star for head coach Jason Garrett, and the club hosted their first padded practices there since the end of the 2018 regular season.

It was hardly business as usual, though. That’s because the Cowboys waited until returning home to announce a big extension for one of their stars, but it wasn’t for a name that has recently been bandied about. Not only did the club infuse a big chunk of change into the defensive unit, something that has been skewed over the last several years, but they got great returns already. Not on their investment, key pieces of their defense returned to the field as DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford and Sean Lee all returned to action after missing much or all of the offseason. Another busy day for Dallas, get your recap here.

Inspirational Jaylon Smith agrees to well-priced extension with Cowboys :: Cowboys Wire

The Cowboys superstar middle linebacker, Smith signed a 5-year, $64 million extension on Tuesday. The Notre Dame alumn has worked his way back from the devastating knee injury that took him from likely top-5 draft pick into the second round, and saw him miss more than a year of football while rehabbing and allowing the nerve in his leg to regenerate. Earlier this summer Smith completed his bachelor’s degree at Notre Dame, and through a clear eye view, he’s now completed another dream.

Cowboys’ DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford to come off PUP Tuesday :: Cowboys Wire

The Boise State duo of Lawrence and Crawford both made their way onto the practice field Tuesday, both in pads, and yes, both practiced. It’s been a long time coming for the defensive linemen, as both have sat out the entirety of training camp. After surgeries this summer, Crawford has been nursing a sore hip, and Lawrence rehabbing his shoulder. Both are back, and looking good for Week 1 against the Giants.

The biggest ‘fluke’ seasons for NFL QBs :: ESPN

Dak Prescott finds himself on a not-so-flattering list of quarterbacks. This time it’s that of the top one-hit wonder quarterback seasons in NFL history. Citing Prescott’s continuously dropping QBR, ESPN had this to say about the Dallas quarterback:

10. Dak Prescott (2016 Dallas Cowboys)

On the surface, Prescott’s three NFL seasons might not look that different from one another, but that’s partly because an increase in attempts has kept his total stats somewhat stable. By advanced metrics, however, Prescott’s second and third seasons have fallen far short of his rookie performance.

Prescott was fourth in the league in total value as a rookie (as judged by DYAR). In the two years since, he’s fallen to 17th and then 25th. His QBR has fallen similarly, from 77.6 as a rookie to 69.9 and then 55.2 last year. Prescott is only 10th on this list because he’s just three years into his career. He certainly could have another highly efficient season that rivals his rookie year. But so far, that first season sticks out as a clear exception on his statistical record.

Despite whatever issues exist with QBR as a stat to measure quarterback play, it does encapsulate more than traditional passer rating as it takes into account both sacks taken and rushing efficiency. The offensive scheme that Linehan had been running out since catching teams off-guard in 2016 could best be described as stagnant. The bright side here is that Prescott has shown he’s capable of much more and in the biggest games, never having lower than a 72.5 QBR in any of his three playoff appearances.

NFL Power Rankings: Chiefs Climbing, Colts Falling as Season Nears :: Bleacher Report

The Cowboys find themselves in the top-10 of Bleacher Report’s most recent power rankings. Just barely, but nonetheless, there they are.

The Cowboys are in tremendous shape. Dak Prescott has completed all nine of his passes this month, Michael Gallup is making waves and there’s no indication DeMarcus Lawrence has had any setbacks in his recovery from shoulder surgery.”

Zeke or no Zeke, the Cowboys are a top-10 team.

The Cowboys roster is full of top tier talent, the question in 2019 will be if they can put it all together and utilize that talent to bring home the ultimate prize, Bleacher Report’s No. 1 ranking. Or the Lombardi Trophy, either way.

NFL Preseason Power Rankings: Who’s on the hot seat entering 2019? :: ESPN

ESPN also has the Cowboys in the top-10 of their newest power rankings, all the way up at No. 9. Todd Archer, ESPN’s Cowboys beat writer answers the question “Who’s (in Dallas) is on the proverbial hot seat?”, saying,

Who’s on the hot seat: Jason Garrett, coach

Why his seat is warm: His contract expires after this season. It doesn’t get any hotter than that. The last time Jerry Jones put Garrett under such heat came in 2014. In response, the Cowboys went 12-4 and won a playoff game before a controversial loss in the divisional round. A week after that loss, Garrett signed a five-year, $30 million deal. Garrett has won the division in two of the past three seasons and made it to the divisional round twice. While he needed only to make the playoffs in 2014, that might not be enough this time, as he might need to make it to the NFC Championship Game. Of course, this could set up a very interesting dynamic. If the Cowboys make it that far, or even to a Super Bowl, Garrett could be a highly sought-after free-agent coach. — Todd Archer

It’s time for the Cowboys to skip the “dress rehearsal” game :: Blogging the Boys

As the NFL has evolved, so has the attitude toward the preseason. The third exhibition game was once the preseason game in which the regulars would play for an extended amount of time, but with technological advances and the amount of money bandied about, Tom Ryle posits that it’s foolish to put the starters in peril before the games count.
