The Dallas Cowboys waited, and let the market be set for them. Regardless of who was driving the hard bargain, the spring of 2019 passed without them working out a long-term agreement with QB Dak Prescott. Just like what happened with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, whose agent publicly declared he could have been signed for $17 million a year in the 2018 offseason (he signed for $21 million per this offseason), the rest of the NFL did not wait for their negotiations to be completed.

This year, Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Wentz have all inked franchise quarterback extensions that far outpaced what people anticipated Prescott being worth. Some wanted him no higher than $20 million a year. Those folks laughed when others suggested $25 million a year and flat out guffawed and ridiculed when Cowboys Wire suggested $29 million a year in March before those other deals came in. Now, the Ft. Worth Star Telegram is reporting that Prescott’s agent Todd France is seeking $34 million a year.

That’s right, $34 million a year.

While that deal could impact his negotiations with the Cowboys, as the team is analyzing all 60 pages of Wentz’s new contract, per source, know that Todd France and CAA have broached a deal in the range of $34 million annually, according to someone with knowledge of the talks.

Two things should be noted here. First and foremost, a negotiation means that two sides go back and forth to reach an agreement that basically neither side is happy with. It was reported a few weeks ago that Prescott’s side returned a counter offer to what the Cowboys proposal was.

Second, whomever leaked this information is doing so for a reason. It could be from the Cowboys side, it could be from Prescott’s side. Regardless, it’s now public knowledge and knowing the temperature of the room from the last several months, it will not go over well with some fans.

The Cowboys certainly would have a reason to do this, as when the number is negotiated down, they will appear to have won if the average annual salary comes in less than $34 million. Even if the number is higher than Carson Wentz’ $32 million a year deal in Philadelphia, there’s an argument to be made Prescott is more accomplished and less of a health risk than the player many think has shown better tools during their first three years, even without better results.

If the reports of the last month of a dynamic shift in Prescott’s passing mechanics and confidence hold true when things actually matter in the regular season, it may not matter.

Prescott was worth a big deal with his warts included. If he cleans those up, he has a chance to be known as a top 5 quarterback in the game as opposed to a top 10 or 12 guy.

Prescott is slated to play 2019 on the final year of his rookie deal for just $2.03 million. He’s far outplayed the deal that came with him being the No. 135 overall pick in the 2016 draft.
