With the NFL free agency period set to begin in little under a month, the Dallas Cowboys have the chore of prioritizing how they will dole out the $46 million dollars of cap space available to their out-of-contract stars. While primary thought may center around retaining talent like DE DeMarcus Lawrence and WR Cole Beasley, it is one lesser known but just as vital piece to their roster that the team appears to be targeting first.

The club is reportedly bringing back long snapper L.P. LaDouceur for a 15th season.

According to multiple sources, the Cowboys will decline the option on WR Terrance Williams' contract creating $2.5 million in savings. Also, a source tells @TheAthleticDFW the team plans on re-signing deep snapper LP Ladouceur for a 15th season.

Last season LaDouceur was given the minimum salary benefit, which reduces the cap hit of minimum contract deals given to two players on each roster. It allows a team to pay a player with a lot of service but only be charged what a more cost-effective replacement would cost. It’s a strong possibility Dallas does that again this year.

The minimum salary for a 10+ year veteran is $1,030,000 in 2019. The Cowboys could only give up to a $65,000 bonus here in order to qualify for the cap discount.

LaDouceur has been a rock-solid fixture in Dallas since his rookie season in 2005 when he was brought aboard after being released by the New Orleans Saints. A Pro Bowler in 2014, he has been an example of perfection at his role without a single errant snap in his career.

When the ink dries on this impeding deal, LaDouceur will also become the fifth-longest tenured Cowboy in team history and it is an honor he has duly earned with sustained excellence.

The Cowboys have had a rich history with the long snapper position going back to their glory days in the early 1990s with Dale Hellestrae. LaDouceur has lasted through three coaching eras in Dallas, playing for Bill Parcells, Wade Phillips and now Jason Garrett. And it is not as if the Cowboys have not provided him competition for him to earn his role through the years. No less than three current NFL long snappers have been in a camp battle at some point with the veteran. Since he succeeded Jon Condo, the Cowboys have had Casey Kreiter (Broncos), Charley Hughlett (Browns) and Zach Wood (Saints) in their training camps and he outlasted them all.

It is likely Dallas will secure his services on another one-year deal just north of the $1.1 million dollar contracts he has signed in the past.

At the end of the day, it is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that LaDouceur’s personal brand of perfection can provide.

It's the best $1M they could possibly spend.

I had him listed as one of their top 3 resigns for the Boyz some said no resign and I was thinking that makes no sense with
what he brings and his salary.

When he someday shows that he is slipping, then consider replacing him. Until that time comes, he's a bargain for what he provides. $1M is chump change in the NFL (and his cap hit is quite a bit less than that). If everybody did their jobs as well as he does, we'd be undefeated every year! :)
