USC reportedly loses Sanchez to NFL draft

Junior, who could be first QB selected, to announce decision Thursday

USC quarterback Mark Sanchez celebrates with the school band after the Trojans beat Penn State in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

USC's Mark Sanchez plans to announce Thursday that he will forgo his senior season to enter the NFL draft, sources close to Sanchez and USC told ESPN.

Sanchez has been discouraged from turning pro by family members and ESPN reported that USC coach Pete Carroll has asked his quarterback to wait until Thursday's NFL deadline for underclassmen to allow for a change of heart.

With Sam Bradford staying at Oklahoma next season, Sanchez or Georgia's Matt Stafford are projected to be the first quarterback picked in the draft.

With Bradford and Tebow staying I can't blame him for leaving.

No, it's not a bad move.

Oh well...I'll miss seeing him next Sept in Columbus.

Out of all the QB's in College I saw this guy consistently make some of the more impressive throws.

He definetely could've used another year of College though.

NFL teams should be very wary of QBs who started one year in college. More than any other position, QB demands experience.

Look at how many QBs come out early who would have benefited from staying another year. More experience is always better. Especially where you are getting real good coaching as it is.

Of course he should stay in college to get more EXP.

But when you see a weak QB class because some others stayed in school it would only be sound financial reasons to enter the draft.

Hard to fault the guy for thinking of his future and looking at who is or is not coming out in the draft and realizing his best chance to be a higher draft pick is now.

Then re-phrase and say teams should be wary of spending a 1st round pick and expecting immediate returns on a guy that has only started for one year in college.

It is a different story if you want to use a late round pick on a guy and let him develop for a few years as the back up. Especially if you already have an all pro as your starting QB.

He started for one year at a college that has been known to produce high quality NFL level talent, including a couple at the QB position in recent years. Throw in the fact that this season a QB who went there developed into a damn fine young QB despite not starting a single game at that school, and that wariness will fade a bit.

Regardless, you can't fault the guy for leaving. Three of the highest rated QBs are going back to school, and Sanchez was already projected a first round guy by most. No-brainer in my mind.

I don't fault Sanchez for going pro. As long as that is truly the players decision it is the right one to make, whether that is staying in school or going to the NFL. It is their life and they can choose how to live. I may not make that same decision if I were in the same position, but I will never know.

I dont understand how anyone could turn down guaranteed financial security for the rest of their life other than for hot college girls.

Leinart blew the call when he had a chance to come out early. I think a lot of guys have taken what happened to him as an example of why not to wait.
