I know most of us are not a big fan of stats, having a QB who constantly puts up big numbers is not enough around here. Stats don't always dictate how the season turns out as the Giants demonstrated but they are a big part of football. Now without further ado.....
The Cowboys were ranked #10 with (+4) in turnover DIF.
Giants were #8 with (+7) and the Pats were #3 with (+17)
Notable teams: G.B (+24) SF (+28) DET (+11)
Only three teams who were in the negative were in the playoffs:
N.O (-3) Denver (-12) Pittsburgh (-13)
As you know, no team with a negative DIF made it past the Divisional round.

The Giants gave up 400 points last year, the Pats gave up 342.
Only seven teams gave up more points than the Giants, none of those teams made the playoffs. For reference Pittsburgh gave up 227 and Baltimore 266.
The Cowboys gave up 347.
Three teams scored more than 500 points: N.E.- 513, G.B- 560, and N.O.- 547. The Cowboys- 369.

Defensively the Cowboys were ranked 7th in the league in sacks with 42, with 19.5 of those coming from Ware. We also were 7th in average yards per rushing attempt. Not bad for a horrid D-line right?
But...but...we are only high up in sacks because of D.Ware. That's like saying the Saints have such a good offense because of Brees. I must say though it "seems" like we never get pressure on the QB.
The Cowboys O-line was ranked 11th in rushing yards per attempt with 4.4, probably because of a spectacular back. How spectacular is he?
Let me name the backs whose lines had a better rushing average: Jonathan Stewart, A.Peterson, L.McCoy, D.Sproles, Fred Jackson, A.Foster, D.McFadden, M.Forte, and R.Mendenhall. Not a bad group. An arguement could be made that most of these guys have a better line.

Our secondary gave up 7.6 yards PER passing attempt. Almost a first down every pass, good for bottom ten in the league. Let's note that only two playoff teams ranked lower than the Cowboys in this category, N.E. and G.B. Both who scored more than 500 points last year as mentioned earlier.

Now let's look at what we have done to improve these stats and ultimately improve our chances of making a deep playoff run.
You can say that our Offensive tackle positions should be solid. Our two starting guard spots should be fought for this training camp and be improved. At worst Costa is a year wiser and stronger under Woicick if he indeed starts.
We got rid of Newman who tried his best but wasn't getting it done. We signed one of the top corners in FA and drafted the best ball hawking corner to come out in years. We are lighting a fire under Jenkin's butt.
The D-line should benefit from the secondary. Expect Lissemore to improve our line. The kid is hungry and worked to earn his time. Throw in Crawford and a reported improved Geathers and now that line rotation looks pretty good.
Let's not forget the 1st round pick we got for a 2nd rounder last year. Bruce Carter should compliment Lee with his great coverage skills. It only makes sense that a position which helps stop the run would evolve into a coverage role when passing became prolific.

Statistically we are in the middle of the pack. Rightfully so as we were a .500 team last year. Every game we lost besides the Eagle's game we could've won. Not giving up almost 8 yards a pass should help.
Do I think we could make a playoff run this year? I really don't know yet, and neither do the optimists or pessimists.
Do I think if we beat the Giants last game we could've made the superbowl? No. Nope.
We have gotten better this off-season. There's no doubt in my mind. How much better? Only time will tell because God knows ESPN won't.
