Had a 48 yard line front row seat, and the best thing I can report is that the band was in mid-season form.

No really, we have some significant deficiencies to solve before September, and I don't see that happening in some cases.

1) QB -- Ash may be made of glass, and the #2 is not close to being ready. The stats for Swoops don't look too bad on the surface, but he made a number of poor and/or ill-advised throws. He didn't look like he was in command of the offense, and his running wasn't actual, since it was only touch on the QB's.
Our #3 is converted TE, and he looked like it, though he was running the #2 O against the #1 D. That's more indicative of Tyrone's deficiencies, since he was up against the #2 D.
#4 is a walk-on, and looked it.
We really need Wittek to sign, and he and Ash might be able to carry the load, though neither is has shown NFL-caliber talent.

2) RB -- Gray and Bergeron were out, so the #2 O had Overstreet at RB. He missed enough assignments to earn coaches' wrath on more than one occasion, but this is correctable. Looked athletic enough to do the job.
Malcolm Brown was a bright spot on offense; ran tough.

3) OL -- This was possibly the most glaring weakness (and biggest challenge to fill), with less than adequate run and pass blocking across the board. Hopefully Wickline will be able to work some magic.

4) WR -- This group looked pretty good. Sanders and Marcus Johnson showed good routes, hands, and moves; they appear ready to step up. Shipley was tops, as usual.

5) TE -- Still no star receiver here, but the passing game in general was insufficient. Have not showed that anyone can both block and catch.

Defense -- Hard to say how good we were, especially at DL, considering the leaky OL and inexperience at QB, but all phases showed flashes of excellence. LB's looked good, and we have some depth there.Thompson and Turner @ safety were both consistently making big plays, and Quandre looked like the next big star at CB. Would like to have seen the DL against better competition.

Kicking -- This does not appear to be an area for concern, despite the loss of UT's first consensus all-American. Punting and kicking were long and mostly accurate.

Daje -- Amazing quickness; a real spark who just needs more touches in the passing and KR game.

In conclusion, there's a lot of work to be done, but Strong is no doubt large and in charge.
This is a fun game, but there was a sense of discipline and purpose that addressed the seriousness of the task at hand. The coaches were not taking it easy on anyone, and the transitions appeared well-organized.

We'll surely be more competitive on defense, but we may be a year away from any national contention, mostly due to the OL issues. The QB and TE questions must be answered as well. Hoping as always for the best.

Nice to see another team reporting questionable QB play from spring games.

They'll get it together, they can't be any worse at the position than they were from 2010 to 2013.

Wittek will graduate next month, then still has 2 years of eligibility. Would like to see him in the mix.

So Baylor, WV, TCU, Tech, OU, and OSU will be beating our Horns like rented mules come next season? Great!

Did you see WVU's Defense last year, it was worse than the Cowboys and we never had a true starter at QB

We struggled last year due to a porous defense (much like the Cowboys).
There is no question that the Horns' D will be better - may really surprise some folks.
QB will be serviceable; offensive productivity will hinge on the success of the OL, which is a work in progress.
Record may be the same as last year, but Horns should be in every game - no more embarrassing blow-outs.

Texas received a verbal from a QB here in Albuquerque today. He was a guy who was being recruited by Charlie when he was at Louisville. The young man's name is Zach Gentry. He is a 4Star QB from Eldorado High School.

I played for his Grandfather in HS. Here is his info:

Interesting connection.

Definitely fired up about Gentry. May now be able to get some other elite commitments who see the opportunity and want to play with him.

LOL..... Keep telling yourself that Fletch. It's better for us if everybody believes exactly this.

QB might end up being a much bigger issue (if that's possible), the any of us ever thought. Ash has fractured his foot so his status, as of now, is uncertain. He is likely out for the entire Spring, with a hope that he can return by this fall. That's a real blow to Texas and to Ash. Hopefully, this is a blessing in disguise for us. This, coupled with the rumors that Witt to Texas may not happen, is a really big issue. It is rumored that Max Witt, the USC Transfer may not be graduating in the Spring, which then prevents him from transferring in time for the Fall, to Texas.

It's getting a little cloudy for Texas at QB right now. We might need to go back to the Wishbone for 2014. LOL.......

Yeah, it seemed inevitable that Wittek would see UT as the absolute best opportunity out there, and would sign.
But he's strung us along since the first of the year, so it may not come to pass (gratuitous pun).

Ash will be ready by September, but I don't trust out OL to protect him very well. So his future is indeed up in the air (did it again).

Swoops is still not accurate or football-educated enough to expect great things from, but the dude is big and can run.

I hate to say it this early, but it appears that our second half season success may rest on the development of Jerrod Heard. He's a true dual threat guy, and a great winner and leader. May surprise us.

We may even see Lorenzo Joe working some at QB as well. He's designated as a WR, but did a great job running the offense at Abilene High the last 2 years. Would likely be better than our converted tight end

I think you are right. Heard may be the de facto option at QB, which is not a terrible thing IMO. I really like that kid and lets face it, when our QB play at Texas has been good in past years, those guys were starters in their Freshman years. I hope this is the case again this year.

I've heard talk that Texas is starting to look at JC options as well, I've read that Texas might be bringing in JC Allen Thigpen. There is a kid Texas is recruiting named Quinten Dormady out of Boerne HS. He's not really a big name as yet but he's really interesting. 6'4" 208, he sustained an injury to his shoulder in his Jr. year and sat out the entire season. However, he is exceptionally accurate and has a pretty decent arm. He's a bit under the radar now but I expect that will change after this season. I like him a lot.

I'm not too excited by Thigpen, but Dormady is interesting. Dr. James Andrews did his shoulder surgery last June (torn labrum), so we can certainly hope for a full recovery. He's a 6'4" 210# QB out of Boerne, where his dad is the head coach; probably has some football smarts.

Problem is, he sat out his junior season last year, so he will be playing his senior campaign at Boerne this year, not Austin.
Might be on the radar for a 2015 commit, though.

I imagine Strong is searching the JC ranks diligently for other QB options. Wouldn't that be a thrill for some unsuspecting kid?

Well, at least he'll be accustomed to the color scheme.
