I have despised Steam ever since it was forced onto pc gamers circa 2004/05.

Steam is a necessary evil and if it wasn't for a handful of games that are "steam only" I wouldn't have it installed on my computer. They too me are nothing more than a glorified digital game rental service with horrible customer service.
I am an old school gamer and for my 50$ I want something physical I can put my hands on, box, disks , manuals, maps, etc. For them to sale nothing more than a serial key for the same price is highway robbery.
For example when a physical copy is produced there are many factors that come into play here....the manufacturing/printing of said materials}box, disks, manuals, etc] as well as shipping said product to stores worldwide. None of these costs are involved with a game on Steam, they generate serial keys by the thousands and sell them for the same price {49.99-59.99}and that extra profit goes into the developer/publisher/valves pocket and none of the cost saving is passed on to you and I , Joe Consumer.
This is nothing more than about greed and control and once the consumer gets accustomed to this{remember 2004/05 when Steam was started and uproar that ensued} expect to see more of your rights as a pc gamer taken away bit by bit

And from what ive heard Steam gets a 75% cut of something they didn't even create.
Sickening.........
Btw there is already a petition with 100,000 sigs against this.

Steam is the best thing that could have happened for PC gaming and I fully expect consoles to move more and more this direction as well. With Internet speeds increasing all the time, the limitation of actually needing the physical install media will eventually be gone completely.

And Steam routinely has ridiculous sales/discounts that place the price of any game you buy during those times waaaaay under what you'd pay at a brick & mortar store. Plus, they aren't just generating serial keys. They actually have to have the bandwidth to distribute the content to everyone that buys the product. Considering how widely used Steam is and just how large the library of games they have (much larger than could ever be possible at a brick & mortar), that's a lot of bandwidth.

Of course they can afford to have those ridiculous sales 2-3 times a year because the rest of the year they turn a huge profit. People{sadly} eventually became accustomed to paying 50 bucks for nothing more than a serial key DRM included. You are purchasing a key to play the game, the game itself isn't yours. Think of it as a expensive rental. And the bandwidth argument holds no water, as it doesn't compare to the cost producing/shipping a physical copy.

I kind of went off on a anti steam rant, but back to the OP, it is nothing more then Valve {attempting} to turn the modding community into a 3rd party paid DLC industry with them taking 75% of the cut w/o doing a thing. Consumers and modders alike should be outraged. People have already shutdown their mods on Skyrim Nexus, and moving them to Steam workshop as well as people stealing bits and pieces of mods and selling them as their own. This opens a whole can of worms/problems. Steam is actually the worst thing that could have happened to pc gaming.
And I stand corrected, the maker of said mod gets 25% with 35% going to Steam and the rest going to the developer.

I don't see why selling a serial key for the same price is a problem. You are paying for the years of development that it takes to make a game, not the production expenses of providing a physical copy. Also, modders are working with a game engine programmed by the developers, so they have the right to take the majority of the cut.

Also, until now modders have been giving out free games for a lot of hard work. 25% will be a huge boost for them. Steam gets a cut because without them they aren't getting any dough. The developer obviously gets the largest cut because they programmed the engine. Seems like fair business to me, and you will start to see modding companies start to do bigger and better things because they are actually generating revenue.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's the market rate for games. Welcome to economics.

Your first line just proves my point....
People have become accustomed to it so it must be Ok. Right?. And the serial key you are buying for that same 50 bucks really is just a license to play the game, the game itself isn't yours. If you don't believe me go read the Steam EULA.
This comes down to greed and control plain and simple.

Modders have been giving out free games? So a mod counts as a game now?
Really?
Most of the mods ive seen that they are charging for are nothing more than a unique sword or armour set which hardly counts as a "free game". And most modders do it to share their work with other players as well as the love of the game, not to turn a buck.
Modding companies making bigger and better things because they can now look forward to that 25% cut, which you know as well as I isn't going to add up to much at all, especially "bigger and better things". Welcome to economics....
And the vast majority of modders aren't companies but individuals.

And as far as your don't buy it comment you know as well as I know with the monopoly Steam has on pc gaming if you want to play certain games you have no choice but to install Steam.

Fair enough, some are additional content. If modders want to do it "for the love of the game" they can. However, they are the ones agreeing to put their stuff on steam which they have the right to do.

Yes, but I am sure you will start to see modding companies pop up now with revenue involved. It's just the start of paid mods. Dice was originally a modding group for BF1942.

Sure, some games may only be on Steam but they are still charging the market price to play a game.

You correct, they are charging a price to play a game, as per Steams EULA the game itself isn't yours, you only get a serial key{license}to play said game. And just because it is the market price doesn't make it fair. I am guessing that a lot{ not all} of people that support Steam are ones that have never known actually owning a game. Sorry....For my 50 bucks I want something with content. Box, Disks, 75 page manuals, maps, etc.
And a serial key{DRM included} as well as a PDF manual doesn't count as anything noteworthy.

Well, too bad because the world is going digital and you will be paying the same. Steam doesn't make game manuals and disks. This goes for all gaming platforms.

the most ignorant thing in this thread is your ignorance is bliss nonsense.

steam provides a great service for me. I hate having to manage the actual media, and overall, I get a better value going through steam then I would buying physical goods.

That doesn't make it right now does it?
Bravo for realizing Steam doesn't make manuals or disks, you've really done your homework I see.
I guess we can summarize this up by saying "I do not mind paying 50 bucks for a license to play a game even if it means the game isn't truly mine".

Well good for you......
And there is nothing more ignorant than paying 50 bucks for nothing more then a serial key which in reality is nothing more then a license to play said game.

Just because you care about disks, manuals and maps, doesn't mean everyone else does, hence why there isn't any push back from consumers. One thing I wouldn't put up with, was Microsoft thinking it was fair to charge me to fix their glitched system (red rings of death) just because the warranty expired. So I said screw it, and haven't played Xbox 360 once since and have no plans on buying an Xbox One. I was contempt to just play PC games, until I got a PS4 as a gift and even with the option of buying physical copies, I almost exclusively buy digital copies. Why, because disks get scratched, and manuals and maps after a while just become junk.

has there ever bee a case of Steam revoking someone's license to play a game? I don't know the reason why they include that language in their terms and conditions, but I don't think it's so the can suddenly decide, you have played the game long enough, if you want to play it more, pay more...
