Through week two:

Run Offense vs. Miami

His false start penalties drive us all nuts, but Flozell Adams’ value to the running game is unquestioned. That 6.0 average is rock solid, coming on steady runs of 5,6 and 7 yards to his side. Marc Colombo has similar numbers but they’re skewed by Marion Barber’s 40 yard TD run late last week; Colombo’s YPA was less than half its current number before that play. Credit Oliver Hoyte and the tight ends, who are blocking like earth movers so far this year.

Barber may have taken the starting role, but Julius Jones will still play a big role in the running game. He’s the faster runner, but look how few outside running attempts he’s had this year. Larry asked the question in the threads that bears repeating — when is Dallas going to run more pitches, sweeps and stretch plays for him? Eleven of his thirteen runs against Miami were up the gut and none of his runs were outside the tackles. That’s not playing to his strengths.

Receivers — Season

The T.O. - Romo connection is getting better, though T.O. had two drops against Miami, something we had not seen through the preseason.

Two points — Sam Hurd needs a bigger sample size, but he looks like he’ll be fine as the 3rd WR until Terry Glenn gets back, if he gets back.

Next, Dallas should throw to Julius Jones more. He had the most impressive Cowboys run against Miami, catching a four yard Romo pass and then making three men miss with two hip twisting cuts. He’s deadly in open space, yet the Cowboys never seem to throw him the ball more than once a game. He could improve his confidence and help the offense with a few more receptions.

Quarterbacks vs. Miami

There’s a drop off from last week, but a sustained 10.0 YPA will still get Romo a return ticket to the Pro Bowl.

Romo’s Passing Grid — Season
(att./comp./yds.)

He’s a left-handed kind of guy. Look how much better Tony Romo has passed to his left so far. He was a disappointing 0-6 throwing short to his right against the Dolphins. Many of those passes were made under duress and two were dropped, but we should also credit Miami, who was ready for every one of the three bootleg passes Dallas called Sunday. They had a target painted on Jason Witten and were also game planning to keep Romo from rolling outside the pocket, where he was deadly last year.

His point about not utilizing Jones to his strengths is right on the money. Give him more pitch outs and passes out of the backfield. Throw in a few draw plays and or screens too.

There was some discussion during the off-season of Romo having trouble throwing to his left. I guess that's not really a problem.

Lets see, no T Glenn and few ;) yards to the right.

That could not be the reason, could it?

They should give Jones more screen passes.. i think that is where he is best at IMHO...

Um, nice sig, Danny...

For some reason, Oklahoma has an amazing number of hot girls. Never been able to explain it, but why ask why?

Anyway, what was I going to say? Oh yeah, that I am amazed at how much our TEs are blocking this year. I thought so even in preseason. I always thought Witten was very medicore, but this year he looks like he's doing better. Even Fasano looks like a better blocker in the little I've seen him IMO.

Some backs like Westbrook and Tiki are simply more dangerous in open space. Let's get JJ out in space where he can use his speed, duh!!! Draws, screens, pitchouts, bring back the option play - something! Why can't the coaches see this...? The day he racks up over 100 total yards, I'll assume they've caught on...

I am really pulling for this team to throw jones the ball and get him out in space automatically.

I think the thing holding jones back, that will always hold jones back is his lack of vision. He never reads where the holes will be or where the defense is going. He just runs it in there and goes down.

I think personally Julius has been good this year. I think he is running really hard and at some point will have a big game. I think throwing him the ball on first down off of play action may end up being the most useful way to use him. He looks good in space, especially when he seems determined not to go down this year, he is really running hard.

His third and 10 run in the third quarter that got called back because of holding was a great run, he should have lost 3 yards but he juked jason taylor and then used his power and determination to fight for the first down.

He had a great pass for a first down on third down taken off the books because of a penalty also and that was to owens on the right sideline.

If he ends up being lefthanded or only throws to that side we will know in a few weeks.

The patriots game plan will tell us all we need to know about his strengths and weaknesses.
