My first day mock, as of February 27th. I’m taking a conservative approach here, assuming Dallas re-signs Marion Barber long term and makes a strong push for Flozell Adams.

Round 1

pick 22 — Dominque Rogers Cromartie, CB Tennessee State : I saw a mock today that puts him in the top ten. That’s the power of a 40 time on some mockers. He had a fantastic combine but I think this is getting carried away. I do think he’ a first rounder now. He would be the first Tennessee Stater to go in the first since Ed Too Tall Jones and Waymond Bryant went in the top ten back in 1974. Let’s hope Too Tall is sending some of that old school mojo to his old pro team.

pick 28 — Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State: He’s big and productive and put up a 4.40 40 time that should answer questions about his speed.

Round 2

pick 61 — Red Bryant, NT, Texas A&M: People on this board have been screaming for a nose tackle the last two years. Here’s your guy. A 322 lb. run stuffer.

Round 3

Matt Forte, RB, Tulane: Ran a 4.46 at 217 lbs.

Looks good to me. Bryant is a hit or miss guy. He could be Casey Hampton at or DeWayne Robertson at the next level

Who's been screaming for a NT since the start of '07?

I was wondering the same thing.

I mean, I wouldn't mind us picking one up, but "Screaming" for one?

Vela, save the sensationalist journalism for the DMN.

I like the #22 pick, but to tell you the truth, I have never even seen highlights of Devin Thomas to tell you what I think of him

Same goes for me re Thomas. Also don't know anything about Red Bryant except he's got the NT size Phillips probably likes; Cowboys supposedly talked to him during the combine. I think Wade might like to draft a NT now to have him ready when Ferguson retires after 09 season. Also would be curious to know how Phillips evaluated Tank Johnson's play last half of season. Haven't seen any rave reviews but Johnson should get better once he goes through our weight conditioning program starting in March as well as the minicamps & TC. I've also wondered if he couldn't be a good backup DE with his quick step, etc in the future.

I'm not sure why we would go after a nose tackle in the second round.

They'll have Fergy and Tank (who played well last year) at the nose and Ratliff AND Spears can play there as well. Not to mention the possibility of getting Bowen to play there.

I'm not sure I understand that at all.

I tend to agree about not going after a NT in the second round, we have others who can/couldd play there, and we have other needs that could be better served in the 2nd.

I'm not ready to buy Thomas as a 1st round, eventual #1 WR just yet.

I could live with it as is. NT? *shrugs* Could be worse. They could have us taking another TE there.

I agree. He might be another Greg Jennings, but he doesn't have the production to be a first round pick. A second rounder? Likely.

NT was a huge need before we found out Ratliff can play the position... well and we signed Tank.

Now it is one of the deepest spots on the team and may be the best 3 deep NT in the NFL.

Red Bryant was a apparently a very likable guy at TAMU who worked hard but he wasnt very consistent. That would worry me in round 2.

you guys are right about Thomas. I'm an MSU alum and I saw him play every game last season. Very good speed, avg. hands, solid route runner, and outstanding production his senior season. Remember too, he can return kickoffs in a big way as well. However, his body of work is thin in college and he didn't show up in the bowl game against Boston College that the Spartans narrowly lost. He's a good kid, who could have a helluva career: reminds me physically of Hynes Ward, but I just think he's a bit of a reach in the first round.

Not taking an RB until the 3rd round? Don't see that happening.
