I would tell him, look, accept 22nd player pay or sit out, your choice.

he can always re-enter the draft and maybe fall past 22 next time around.

What kind of leverage does Quinn have? Well for one Cleveland will lose out all that time for developing Quinn. It's obvious they think he's the QB of the future. So losing that time will hurt them. He should put some butts in the seats. If he holds out they may have to start another QB early on. I wonder how badly Cleveland wants to start this guy on opening day???

On the other hand he's slotted at 21. Is he likely to get that much more money by holding out?

I guess he'll have to decide if the money is worth the negative image and the time loss towards his own maturation.

I don't think they have any intention of starting him day 1.
He wasn't a top 5 pick. He was drafted much later and the Browns chose not to take him with a top 5 pick.

Thomas has leverage and will start opening day.

Quinn is a nice jersey seller but he has to beat out other young QBs if he plans to ever start. It not like they view him as Joe Montana.

He was drafted with basically their pick in next years draft so provided he is ready to go next year they break even.

I'd imagine they'll try to win 4 or 5 games; insuring the pick isn't a top 2 or 3 pick, then slide Quinn into the starting role but it may well be the final month of the season before that happens.

Exactyl, and how high are you willing to draft a QB that hasn't played for a year and who presents a contract problem? Quinn has no leverage.

Emmitt Smith was successful. Quinn's agent probably figures its worth a shot.

I am sure they could give him a bit more money than his slot but lets face it, They have a rookie pool that they have to stick to and there is no way to give him top 5 money within the rookie pool that has him slated at 22 is there. I mean it would have to be a very long term contract to fit it in.

As was pointed out there is precedent right here on the Boys. Agents are expected to do everything possible to get their clients every penny they can (and of course increase the agents earnings as well). Nothing new here- just pointing out that the Browns GM screwed up by flapping his gums.

But Jerry Jones "flapped his gums" too by announcing that Quinn was #8 on the Cowboys' board, thereby telling Romo's agent, by passing on Quinn, that Romo was better and worth more than the #8 pick in the eyes of the Cowboys.

Maybe Romo and his agent wait to see what the eighth pick this year commands. Last year, Cutler's deal (11th pick) was $48 million for 6 years (http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/DEN/9574754).

And Leinart (10th pick) was guaranteed $14 million (http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/ARI/9603011).

The 8th pick (though not a quarterback) probably commanded more, but I don't have the figures.

It might establish an interesting baseline for negotiations.

I guess it will depend on how hard core romo and his agent want to go.
He SHOULD get a better deal then Schaub got. Frankly, he should get a better deal then Russell will get.

Loose Lips Could Torpedo Quinn’s Rookie Ship
By Rafael Vela

I don’t know if there’s a textbook for wannabe GMs, but if there is, it should include this line:

do not ever, ever say “we had player X rated at the top of our board” when you get him at a much lower draft slot.

Browns GM Phil Savage may learn this lesson the hard way; word from Brownsland is that prized QB Brady Quinn may hold out, based on Savage’s claim that he rated Quinn as a top five player. Quinn was drafted 22nd overall, in the deal with Dallas, and still wants to be paid like a top fiver.

You can’t blame him. You’re never guaranteed a second contract in the rough-and-tumble NFL world. You have to make the most of the deal in front of you.

Savage should have consulted Jerry Jones when the two were working out the deal that put Quinn in Cleveland. In 1990, Jones crowed that Emmitt Smith was a top five player on Dallas’ board when the Cowboys landed him at pick 17. Armed with this information, Smith’s agent Pat Dye Jr. played hardball and held Smith out of camp.

– Browns Watch, June 17th Edition

The same story says the Browns might start third year QB Derek Anderson if the season started today. All three Browns QBs are apparently having trouble learning new OC Rob Chudzinski’s offense, and Anderson has the firmest grasp of it so far.

This makes me go hmmm. Chudzinski was hired off San Diego’s staff. Then Chargers OC and current Dolphins Kahuna Cam Cameron ran the same system that Norv Turner runs, which has a reputation for being one of the easier playbooks to learn. (Jason Garrett will use much of the same passing playbook in Dallas.)

You wonder what system Chudzinski is working if his QBs continue to struggle?

Regardless, it’s all good from Dallas’ perspective.

I thought Quinn was just a regular guy. I'll-fitting suit with an, ahem, stern looking woman at Draft Day. He wanted so bad to be drafted by Cleveland, his primo choice (go figure) that he literally sweated it out. When
Cleveland took him he pointed to the heavens. He was home again.

So much for a bargaining chip.

Cleveland can say sit and be a nobody or play at our level of compensation. Or would you like Minnesota? Or Baltimore.

Quinn shot himself in the foot. He's an idiot for drooling over Cleveland before the draft and now being a diva.

Yes, my simple and rough-hewn Forum brothers, I say nay unto
Quinn, cause he is a jack ash.

One thing Vela missed was that Jerry Jones had said if the trade wasn't made we were going to draft Spencer at 22. We got him at 26th.

Does this mean Spencer will ask for 22nd money ?

He says Cleveland should have consulted Dallas before staying he was a top 5 on their board, but Jerry did the same thing, to a certain extent, with Spencer.

you can't say a player is top 5 on your board and expect him to not take that literally in contract negotiations, even if Brady's agents use that as a ploy, it's a good one, Savage or whoever should have curbed his enthusiasm on that one

It's his agent more so then him. He just wants to play. I highly doubt money matters to him. He wants to be able to compete as much as possible to win the starting job.

About game 5-6 of his holdout we should offer Cleveland our 2nd #1 from next year! Lmao!

I mean, that would be priceless! Even if we had no plans for him, just to shaft it to the Browns like that would be legendary.
