Playing Old Tapes
By Rafael Vela

The Cowboys are playing a new Giants defensive scheme Sunday Night.

The Giants are facing a Cowboys defense that’s very different from the one they’ve seen the past couple of years.

Wonder how they prepare for these new looks? By looking at old tape.

In the Cowboys’ case, offensive honchos Jason Garrett and Tony Sparano will look for tendencies by studying another division opponent — the Eagles. New York’s new DC Steve Spagnuolo was Philadelphia’s linebackers coach the past few years. He’s installing Jim Johnson’s scheme up I-95 for his new team.

If you recall the second half meltdown Dallas had in Philadelphia last year, you know that the Eagles alternated overloading sides of the Dallas line with very effective twists that threw off the Cowboys blockers, especially the left side of Flozell Adams and Kyle Kosier.

Think back to my camp reports. How often did I mention that Sparano worked his guys against twists? Only every day. He knows that Spagnuolo remembers that game plan and how well those stunts did. Sparano is determined not to let the new guy beat him with an old trick.

Dallas knows that if it can protect it should have receivers open down field. It did last year, but Drew Bledsoe was too harried to find them. Sparano and Garrett also know that the Giants don’t have Brian Dawkins in deep patrol. They’re giving James Butler his first start.

When Wade Phillips prepares his game plan, he can refer to an ‘05 matchup against the Giants where Eli Manning went crazy, ripping his secondary for 352 yards. Phillips and his guys let Manning off the mat; after racing to a 21-3 lead, the Giants scored 17 points in the last six minutes of the first half to send the game to halftime at 21-20 Chargers.

Phillips is known as one of the best in game adjusters and he found an antidote for Manning, holding the Giants to just three points as San Diego pulled away for a 45-23 win.

Phillips will know New York’s personnel by looking at Dallas’ games the last season. He’ll also know how Manning reacts from his own first hand experience trying to mess with Eli’s head.

Which defensive newbie can spring the bigger surprise Sunday night? His team will likely leave Texas Stadium 1-0.

So Phillips is good at in-game adjustments? That is music to my ears.

Giants will atempt to do what any team will do aginst a high pressure defense. They will run draws and traps as well as screens. Dallas must be able to read and react quickly to these plays and not over run them. Dallas also must do a better job of tackling than what we showed during the pre-season.
