Signs of the Season — Contract Negotiations Begin
By Rafael Vela
– The Cowboys have begun negotiations with draftees and with a few key veterans, most notably TE Jason Witten, whom the team hopes to have signed before the season begins.
– The questions about Bill Parcells‘ successor keep coming. I’m on record as believing Parcells won’t retire after this season, unless the team suffers a rash of critical injuries and finishes 6-10 or 7-9. A repeat of ‘99, when Parcells’ Jets were offseason AFC favorites, only to see Vinnie Testaverde tear an Achilles tendon in the season opener, could send Parcells into retirement. If the team wins in double digits and makes the playoffs, we’ll see him back.
That said, keep this in mind: the coach who follows Parcells will have to be comfortable with the 3-4 defense. Parcells finally got Jerry Jones to draft players for that scheme and to junk the smaller/faster player templates left over from the Jimmy Johnson era. Jones admitted this will be the long-term personnel direction the Cowboys take; Dallas will not change player philosophies again the minute Parcells leaves.
– Ouch! Check out this quote from Don Shula,

– Ouch! Check out this quote from Don Shula,
‘’Nick Saban has got [the Dolphins] headed in the right direction,'’ Shula said Tuesday of Miami’s second-year coach, “after about nine years of not heading in the right direction.'’
And who ran things those nine wayward years? Why Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt. It seems Jimmy leaves bitter feelings at every pro stop. Shula still won’t mention him by name.
