The Real Game Planning Starts This Weekend By Rafael Vela
Now that the Broncos game has passed down the memory hole, it’s time to prepare for preseason week three. This is when most teams begin with actual dress rehearsals for the season. By now, staffs know who is starter material and who is likely to be cut. Only a few rosters on decent NFL teams are unknown at this point.
The focus therefore shifts from evaluation to preparation. Teams will look at films of their opponents and develop game plans. Teams will play their starters for approximately three quarters, allowing for the coaches and roster to practice half time adjustments.
Now is the first chance we’ll get to see who’s legit and who’s faking it.
That said, I’ll stick by my tried and true belief that this is only the first such dress rehearsal. While teams will scale back in week four, watching the final roster showdowns and trying to keep their starters healthy, many teams will still not be prepared on opening day.
Longer readers know I think that week two is the real beginning of the regular season and that week one is often a carryover from last year. Age, injuries and excessive turnover mean some clubs just won’t have it all in order when the games begin to count.
In any case, pass the popcorn. Real, serious football is about to be played.
