As a senior this year, despite facing constant double teams and pickups from running backs (something new Butler admits was he had to adjust to) he accumulated ten stops for loss, three sacks and 50 tackles overall. Butler's numbers help illustrate his athleticism which allows him to wreak havoc in the backfield, but his ability to clog the middle with his size and girth helped lead Lousiana Tech to Conference USA's number one ranked run defense (114.5) and ninth overall in America.
Potential: What first stands out about Vernon Butler on tape is his quick-twitch athleticism which remins me of recent defensive tackle prospects such as Corey Liuget and Kawann Short. However, what has scouts giddy about Butler is the fact that this athleticism comes packaged in a six-foot-three 315 pound body.
Firing out of his stance with a lightning quick first step, Butler does a great job extending his arms into blockers. Using his length to create space, Butler is able to keep his man at bay and easily discard blockers to make a run at the quarterback or make a play on the ball carrier. And somewhat surprisingly for a smaller(ish) school lineman is Butler's refined hand placement and technique
