Romo has ranked among the top 8 in passer rating and top 6 in yards per attempt for four consecutive years. Since the merger, this has only been done three times.

Dan Fouts 1978-83
Peyton Manning 2003-07
Tony Romo 2006-09

Romo is the only player to do it before his 30th birthday.

These are all the players since 1970 who've had at least 4 such seasons (consecutive or otherwise). There are only ten players who've done it. Fouts did it six straight years. Manning just missed 9 years in a row.

*Manning 8 1999-2001, 2003-07
Fouts 7 1978-83, 85
Marino 6 1984, 86, 92, 94-96
Young 6 1992-94, 96-98

Anderson 5 1973-75, 81-82
Montana 4 1984, 87, 89-90
Aikman 4 1991, 93-95

*Favre 4 1995, 97, 2001, 07
Warner 4 1999-2001, 2008
*Romo 4 2006-09

* still active
Hall of Famer
minimum 300 attempts per season

Tony is building quite the legacy. I think he has another gear and that we're going to have the privilege of seeing it this season.

I think that list of 10 guys accounts for about 30% of every Super Bowl champion in the past 40 years.

These lists inevitably leave somebody out, because you have to check everybody who you think might have a chance. I left out one Hall of Famer, somehow.:

Staubach 4 1975, 77-79

Throw in:

  • 3rd highest rated passer in NFL history
  • A winning percentage of close to 70%
  • 3 Pro Bowls and 2 Division titles in less than 4 years as a starter
  • Numerous Cowboys passing records
and one starts to realize how special Romo is and he's in his prime!
Ironically, for someone who was considered "overrated" early in his career (because of a great deal of initial hype) he has actually become underrated, in my opinion.

Besides his nearly 70% regular season winning percentage, it's his record in prime time games that impresses me the most: 16-3 (84%), including 11-0 on the road. He's also 4-0 on Thanksgiving.

You know, the list does have Super written all over it.

All 11 guys (counting Staubach now) either won a Super Bowl, or (in the case of Marino, Fouts, Anderson, and Romo) were knocked out of the playoffs by one of the other QB's on the list.

Marino by Montana
Anderson by Montana
Fouts by Anderson
Romo by Favre

That particular list is overloaded with active players in an era of high ratings. If you look at the Top 20 rated passers of all time, 18 of them played during the last 11 years. Probably safe to say that there were more than two great passers in the whole rest of the history of the league. I bet Romo sticks up there longer than most of the others, though.

And I definitely agree about Romo being underrated. No question.

Rodgers 1 2009
Rivers 2 2008-09
Brady 2 2005-07
Brees 3 2006, 08-09
Rodgers can still get 4 in a row before age 30, if he does it the next 3 years. Brees still hasn't got his 4th. He and Rivers haven't been as consistent as Romo. Nobody has.

Elway 1 1998
Moon 3 1988-90
Kelly 3 1989-91

All Hall of Famers who never put together 4 seasons' worth of numbers to match Romo's.

I figured Terry Bradshaw might have done it once or twice. I forgot how good he eventually became. He matured (loosely-speaking) into a consistent QB. I knew there must have been some reason this guy was in the Hall of Fame.;)
Bradshaw 4 1977-79, 81

That makes 6 guys besides Romo who have done it four times. Of course, Romo has the rest of his career to do it one more time and move past them.

That is interesting stuff. I get so sick and tired of the media always putting Rivers and Rodgers over Romo.

Romo is just as good as Rodgers and Phillips. In fact, I'd take him over both of them, but I'm biased. However, biased or not, I'm taking Romo, and you are going to have to deal with him.

That is good stuff.

Ya know, I never thought he would bounce back from fumbling that wet football in Seattle.

Boy was I wrong. He has come back better and better each year and its because as the Tuna used to say, 'he gets it'.

Meeting him and being to sit in his presence for a couple hours was one of the greatest moments in my 22 years of living.

R u the one that his dad brought you over to him and bought you drinks or something like that??? If not, then you have got a story to tell mister.

UFA Tony Romo should never be considered overrated. Seriously, anyone who thinks he's overrated pretty much HAS to be a hater. He takes more than his fair share of blame and people nitpick at his success.

You hate the Cowboys, They finally found a good QB. Just let it go, haters.

Romo is very likely to do it again this year putting him in VERY select company! :D
