its awesome....i hated the previous one....this one is much improved

What gives me hope is that he made the transition to OLB and it didn't appear to phase him. I have high hopes for him going into this year.

Brandon Williams>Victor Butler

:muttley:

I think it's more like "small mo" Butler. He's not that big and it doesn't look like he has a lot of room on his frame to get bigger.

Don't take it personally that Vic is no B-Will, Bob. ;)

Both Butler and Williams apparently need work in the weight room. LBs Coach Herring even commented on Williams lack of upper body strength and that Butler seemed to wear down as the season progressed last season which showed in his play on the field. Hopefully with a full offseason, this wont be an issue - or as much of an issue next season.

If anything we do know Butler has an ability to get up the field, turn the corner to pressure the QB. Not sure about Williams but coaches/players were very high on him before he got injured.

All we need is for one of these guys to become a player. It would be nice to be able to give Ware/Spencer a rest every now and then and not have to worry about a severe drop in performance...

I like Victor Butler. Hopefully he can contribute more this season on nickel packages.

Impressive as it may be, wasn't he coming in fresh for the most part, when he got those sacks? Or was that another game?

Herring seems competent. I'll take his word for it. If both contribute this year the position will be in as good a shape as it has ever been in.

I like the kid, he makes plays..

Roster Rundown
Butler Flashed Some Pass Rushing Ability As A Rookie

Editor's Note: Throughout the off-season, DallasCowboys.com staff writers will take a closer look at the roster, analyzing each player's impact last season and just how he fits into the team's 2010 plans. Today's featured player is Cowboys linebacker Victor Butler.

Name: Victor Butler
Position: Outside Linebacker
Height/Weight: 6-2, 246
Experience: One Season
College: Oregon State
Contract Status: Signed Through 2012

Key stat: Butler finished the 2009 season with three sacks in limited opportunities, but quickly showed what he is capable of when pinning his ears back to get after the quarterback. It was just Week 3 when Butler posted two sacks on Jake Delhomme within 100 seconds, as the Panthers attempted a last-minute drive in their Monday night loss at Cowboys Stadium. Butler also tripped up a scrambling Donovan McNabb for a short loss late in the Cowboys' November win at Lincoln Financial Field.

2009 Impact: While serving as an occasional substitute, Butler offered the Cowboys a nice size/speed combination on special teams last season. He also started the Dec. 19 game at New Orleans when the Cowboys wanted to ease DeMarcus Ware into action just six days after he was carted off the field with a neck injury. Butler's biggest contribution to the defense came on known passing downs late in games, when the Cowboys attempted to keep Ware and Sam linebacker Anthony Spencer fresh. Butler became the first backup on both the strong and weak side when fellow rookie outside 'backer Brandon Williams tore his ACL in the preseason.

Where They Fit: Butler, who played defensive end at Oregon State, could fill in at both outside spots in 2010 after getting a crash course in 3-4 linebacking last season. His transition to the position is a work in progress, as it is for most converted ends because of the added coverage responsibilities, but Butler is athletic enough for the job. The Cowboys seemed more excited by Williams' ability as a pass-rusher, but Butler probably has a leg up because of the year's seasoning. Still, the Cowboys would like to be able to plug in both guys with more regularity next year, spelling Ware and Spencer.

Writers Analysis:

Nick Eatman: Butler had a good year and made the most of his opportunities but still, the Cowboys weren't convinced enough to play him consistently. If things stand as is, then Butler should get a good chance to show his improvements in his second season. But Wade Phillips loves getting guys that fit his defense and if a top-notch pass rusher is available in the middle rounds, I think the Cowboys would have a hard time passing on guys like that. So there's a chance that Butler, and even Brandon Williams will have to fight for their playing time once again next year. And that's just backup playing time behind Ware and Spencer.

Josh Ellis: It was a pretty big leap of faith for the Cowboys to release Greg Ellis last summer, but the drafting of Butler and Williams made it possible in their mind. The backup outside linebackers were going to have to play special teams because Ware and Spencer were locks to start and play almost every down. And that's mostly what Butler did, as one of only three Cowboys rookies activated for all 16 games. His continued progress makes the position stronger in 2010, but he's still not going to play a lot of defensive snaps unless there's an injury.

Brandon Williams>Victor Butler

how do you figure ?

no one has seen Williams play

I know a guy that is a huge TT fan said Williams needed another year of college ball

Butler is a beast

and if Williams is greater than Butler then good

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2009/4/3/819088/rumblings-scouting-report-texas

What are his strengths? Are speed/athleticism his forte, and if so, does he rely on that to make plays alone? Does he have any pass rush moves?

Seth C: Absolutely, speed is perhaps Williams best trait; that seems to be his biggest advantage on less athletic offensive tackles. One of the reasons why Williams had such a successful season this year was because Texas Tech has a similar pass rushing end, McKinner Dixon, and for the first time in Williams' career, he didn't see as many double-teams as he had during his sophomore season. Again, speed is Williams' biggest attribute. He does have a good spin move, but power is not the name of his game

Weaknesses: A bit of a 'tweener... Average size, bulk... Not particularly strong against the run... Might be a one trick pony... Stiff... A bit of an arm tackler... Burst is good, but not great... Might be better as a 3-4 OLB.

How well does he play against the run?

Seth C: Williams is okay against the run, but I wouldn't say that it's a strength. Talk to a Texas Tech fan and they'll tell you that most teams were pretty successful running right up the middle against the Red Raiders.

Is Brandon Williams ready to contribute to an NFL team right away? The Bills need a pass rush threat immediately; would he help in 2009? Is he more of a project - a guy that needs some time to grow?

Seth C: Being the homer, I would love to tell you that I think he's ready to compete immediately, but I just don't think that's the case. He's a little bit shorter than what he was listed as at Texas Tech and he was already on the smaller side at 245-250 pounds for a defensive end. I see Williams as strictly an edge guy right now, being really good as a speed rusher, but will probably struggle in the professional ranks because he lacks the requisite strength to play all three downs as a defensive end.

Wade and Herring both said Williams is thick with natural strength and explosion. Ware and Ratliff mentioned how impressive he was, too. I think I'll put their judgement over that of "Seth C".

well what ever I was going on that TT fan that said he should have stayed another year

but I hope is better than Butler - but I highly doubt it

I have seen Butler plays an Williams plays in college an Butler looks like the guy who wants it more

let him prove me wrong
