Jerry Jones: Roy is still the ‘X’ WR (#1 WR)

By dcfanatic,

Jerry Jones is excited about what Miles Austin is doing, but it seems like he doesn't want to let go of the idea that Roy Williams is still the #1 WR in Dallas. But our eyes don't lie Jerry...

Here's the entire interview with Jerry...

Jerry on 105.3 The Fan

Hey Mondo...Stop Talking! It's bad enough the lead guy stinks. We don't need you chiming in with misinformation. How does he not know Miles Austin has been starting the last three weeks and isn't playing special teams anymore?

And that Miles is playing on a one year deal so he's getting a new contract next season!

Here's a guess. On Sunday Mondo is out with the wife doing some antiquing and doesn't even watch football, lol.

The #1 WR thing is overblown. Every team in the league will switch the X and Z spots, depending on what the defense shows, matchups, down and distance, etc.

If Roy wasn't good enough to be starting over Hurd or Crayton, that's one thing. But if it's a debate between the '#1 and #2 WR' it's not what it's being cracked up to be.

Roy and Romo just dont have any chemistry.

Even your boy Broadus said that Roy is doing what he is supposed to be doing. Romo and Roy just aren't on the same page at all.

Once Romo figures out how to get him the rock that will just be another weapon because according to Broadus Roy is doing the things he needs to do to make plays.

I have a theory on Romo to Roy.

They spent all Spring and Summer playing catch.

Romo should be able to hit him with his eyes closed at this point in time.

But if Roy never hits the 'mark/spot' at the same point in time every time out on his routes then Romo knows this by now.

So as I watch Romo it seems like he's aiming passes at Roy instead of just letting it fly.

The X receiver isn't necessarily the #1 receiver. It's just the X receiver.

NBCDFW: Jones Reaffirms Williams' No.1 Status

BY Scott Crisp // Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 at 03:45 CST

With everyone else in the greater Dallas area discussing the Tony Romo-Roy Williams connection, or lack thereof, owner Jerry Jones took time to weigh in on Tuesday, on his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan, fairly predictably reiterating his belief in his last big signing.

This, to Jones' credit was no chauvinist screed, as he said that Williams and Romo share blame in this regard, while lauding their respective attitudes.

"I think that both of them are really very accurate in what they're saying about room for improvement but all the room in the world to improve," Jones said. "Tony's thrown some balls that only Roy Williams even had a chance to catch and then Roy's dropped some balls and mis-run some routes.

"But the bottom line is that they both have the greatest attitude, working, really, to get it right. As long as you've got that, you'll get it right and I know everyone noticed Roy Williams out in front, leading on some of those other receptions and some of those other runs out there."

Jones also responded to the near-unanimous belief that Miles Austin, rather than Williams, is the Cowboys' true no. 1 receiver, a belief that pervaded the announcer's booth last Sunday, as Austin posted better numbers than Williams once more. But Jerry is no waffler, for good or ill, and thus, when asked about the announcers' remarks, Jerry shot the idea down quickly.

"I did [hear them], and what's neat about this stuff is we have a quarterback who can get them the ball to them if they're the fifth receiver, just to be a little sarcastic about it," Jones continued. "But the real world is, Roy Williams is...They call it the X receiver out there, and Roy Williams, that's his position. That's what he can do and do best and he's got excellent skill.

"We're going to maximize this and it's good to know we have this for the future, and this year."

Roy played the X receiver spot with TO here. Did anyone think that meant that he was the #1 receiver then?

Of course not. X receiver does not mean #1 receiver.

Thus, they're misquoting Jerry by saying he "reaffirms" Roy's status as the #1 receiver.

I think Roy just has to get Romo and Garrett to throw him the ball on the first play from scrimmage in the next game to regain his number 1 status

Roy needs to be benched for a couple weeks. Maybe that would deflate his huge ego and he would listen to his coaches.

Michael Irvin even said that Roy would not listen to him in training camp....as a veteran player RW didn't want to listen to anyone. When Irvin speaks, Roy Williams needs to be smart enough to listen...

Roy runs bad routes and seems to have brick hands this year. Not sure why someone making 9Mil a year can NOT do the basics, but this is really sad. Come on Roy...man up.

This makes absolutely no sense.

I agree. I think too many get hung up on this #1 WR BS

RW listens to the coaches Irvin is not a HC for the Cowboys. I'm glad Irvin is interested but he is not a coach. Irvin played his game did not take information from Pearson he went out and did it himself RW will do the same.

Plus both are two different WRs. Roy catches the ball with his hands, because Irvin made a living across the middle, he absorb a great deal of his catches into his body.

Roy and Romo both will get on the same page this season, in the mean time stupid threads about benching him will continue until he and Romo connect on a consistent basis.

I agree. I loved having Irvin all those years and I'm glad he is still one who supports this team. As for RW he will get things worked out and I think when Tony and RW do manage to get on the same page the sky is the limit in what this offense will be able to do.

So how long is it going to take? 2 years? Longer?

The whole "same page" idea is a copout IMO because no other receiver on the team is having that issue and if no one else is, it's a problem with Roy.

At some point Garrett is going to have to just ditch the book and give Roy the CliffsNotes. Or maybe put some colors in there with pop-ups or something. Eliminate every possibility of reader error and just give the guy a route. No guessing games, just get out there and run this route.

Its a problem with Roy AND Tony.

This isn't just on 1 person.

Roy can't catch passes that skip 2 feet in front of him or go sailing over his head.

IMO I feel like Sam Hurd should cut into Roys snaps until Roy and Romo start playing better pitch and catch.

Its getting to late in the season to still be dealing with chemistry issues. No need to force it at this point.

Hold on. I thought part of the charm of Williams and one of the things that makes him "special" was that he can make catches that others can't and that Romo has to learn to become comfortable putting the ball in those spots and letting him do that?

Sorry, I don't see it. The balls that Romo has put in the dirt or so massively overthrew over his head have been but a small percentage of the problem. For whatever reason, Romo seems to hit the mark with everyone else, yet Williams is either pulling up short, not getting up high enough or honestly dropping them. The percentage of passes he's caught compared to those thrown at him are ridiculous and as Sturm pointed out in his blog, can't be ignored.

Eventually, it might need to be acknowledged that what we have on our hands is a more expensive version of Keyshawn Johnson. The reality is he's probably worse.

If this is the case, you are correct. We probably need to move on. There's always next offseason where they can work on "chemistry", right?

All Williams has to do is have just a single game where he makes an impact. He's not doing anything differently than last year. It is maddening. There comes a point where the coordinator and QB can't be the complete reason.

So you are saying Romo is only throwing bad balls to Roy? If so, that is not a true assessment of what has transpired in the games.

Of course not. He's been a little less consistent with his accuracy this year in general.

But the same ratio is repeating itself with Roy Williams over and over again. What is his catch percentage, something ridiculous like 35%? While others are much higher? Sorry, that's on the WR more than some issue with Romo's accuracy in general. To me, that indicates more a location concern. In other words, Williams is not where he needs to be. Even in cases where Romo has put it on the money, he's had drops. I won't doubt both are pressing, but I would figure Williams' share of the blame is greater. When the QB seems more comfortable throwing to the likes of Hurd or even Ogletree, does that mean it is his fault or the receivers?
