Choice or Brewster: Who was supposed to block Johnson?

After checking out the game a few times this play intrigues me. I don't really want to call anyone out, but someone didn't get the block on Johnson and he was able to run right in and sack McGee.

Take a look and tell me what you think...

I think from the reaction of Choice right after the play it's Brewster's job to pop out and take that edge rusher Johnson. Choice immediately jumps up in front of McGee at the snap but I think it's because he's looking to pick up the inside LB should be come on the blitz. And of course Choice is expecting the Left Tackle Brewster to pop and take on Johnson.

Again. This isn't about blaming anyone. It's about the X's and O's of football.

What do you guys think?

I think the LT should have done the job but there's no way to know what the line call was.

I saw that and tried to explain that in another thread but it fell on deaf ears. Better to blame Choice in their eyes.

Does it matter?

You are the prime example of why this place can't have a ****ing dscussion anymore.

I preface the thread with a nice little statement that we can talk about X's and O's so some people can learn about the game and it's not about the blame game.

But nooooooooooooo.

You have to bring the typical BS.

Just don't say anything if it doesn't matter to you.

Let the people who want to discuss it do so.

In this situation, the DE was lined up over the LT and the ROLB was free on the outside.

It was Choices job to block the ROLB because it was clear that the line call had the line have head up responsiblity. Blitz pickup for a rb is always look inside (C) out and block the first man that shows.

In this case, the free man was the olb and the line DE was clearly the LT's responsiblity, which it typically would be. When the DE crashed, he picked up the blitzing LB.

JMO of course...

I thought about something else too.

If Romo was in there maybe he moves Choice over to his left side if indeed it was his job to pick up Johnson.

Maybe that is something McGee will learn in film study this week.

As an Offensive linemen the #1 rule is to not let anyone beat you inside.

The D slid left which naturally causes Brewster to protect his inside gap.

So the Linebacker comes in on a blitz behind that guy and the Left Tackle Releases the Right Defensive end off too his Left Guard who is uncovered and picks up #52.

The guy who blitzes off the Edge is 100% Choices man.

If Romo is in the game he probably see's that and lines up Choice on the side Michael Johnson is walked up on.

It's a well designed blitz for the 1st game of the preseason too....

Dude, its one damn play. IN A PRESEASON GAME.

Ever hear of paralysis by analysis? Thats what this is.

Its PRESEASON...there's gonna be some bad plays here and there...and guess what else, there gonna be some bad plays DURING THE SEASON too. Doesnt mean somebody sux or that you have to figure out who to blame. Sometimes the other team makes some plays too. Even the 92 & 93 Cowboys made some bad plays here and there.

I don't think you're going to have too many occasions in which the back is supposed to pick up the outside rusher FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE. They were overloading that side with a 6-man blitz, so it was going to be a problem no matter who the tackle picked up, but it would have been much easier for the back to pick up the LDE or the blitzing ILB, rather than the OLB.

Really, both McGee and the receiver in the slot should have read that and picked up in easy 5+ yard reception. Wouldn't have mattered who they blocked then.

Brewster easily. Choice shouldn't have to slide over from the opposite side to take on a pass rusher.

I'm still trying to figure out why Brewster attempted to double down on the DT on the right side.

They are playing against a 4-3 so Brewsters responsiblity is the Defensive End.

His man pinches in which naturally causes him to protect his inside gap.

They ran a stunt behind it and he slid off of it to the middle backer like he was supposed too.

The guy on the very edge is Choices guy and Choice was just beat by his alignment on the field.

I think the defense did a good job of baiting them both inside. when the RB is held into a play, he's like a safety on offense - to pick up the free-coming rusher. I can see how Brester may have gotten baited inside, right or wrong, but he's on the front line. As the safety valve to pick up the free-ruser, Choice should have reacted to this, especially because he's playing deeper in the backfield and has a better survey of the front line and LBs. except he reacted inside before the play even developed. So ultimately, I've got to put this on him.

If the OLB wasn't on the LOS showing rush, you might have an argument.

Here's the lineup:

OB--RE--DT--DT--LE
--LT-LG--C--RG-RT-TE

There's no way you can tell me that RE was his responsibility, without regard to the outside backer. You've got 5 defensive players on the line of scrimmage and six blockers. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the outside backer was the LT's responsibility.

There's no stunt. That's just a blitzing ILB.

Yes, I'm sure that Choice's responsibility was to block someone he couldn't possibly get to because of where he was lined up on the field.

Yeah even if we would've had slide protection to the left Michael Johnson still wouldn't have been Brewsters guy.

Of course they probably wouldn't call for the line to slide protect to the left unless Choice was lined up on the left to begind with.

Brewster's man is the player over him. He can't just let him go because a defensive end walks up.

What if Brewster lets him go and all of the linebackers drop into coverage?

You got Choice 1 on 1 with a defensive end.

The Left Guard isn't going to recognize the guy is pinching quick enough because his 1st job is to make sure his inside is protected also.

No one designs a play where you have 6 men blocking 4 men, all the while leaving the blitzing OLB to be picked up by the running back on the opposite side of the field.

If so, we got problems.

That's why I think Romo would've probably reconized it and moved Choice over to that side.

And you don't know exactly how many men will rush. All you can do is guess and design a play around what your guess is.

The only question I have is whether or not the slot receiver has the option to read the defense and run a slant there so McGee can get rid of the ball quicker.

I can't see who that guy is but that is where a guy like Crayton who has played quarterback knows how to kill teams.

Or the LT would have just followed the simple rule of blocking the outside rusher.

That's not the rule unless you are running zone.

This is just simple pass protection and the rule is to not get beat inside.

The LT's job is also not to have eye's in the back of his head and know where Choice is lined up at.
