This has nothing to do with the actual dish or cable company.

I am not talking about how the game is watched on your tv, I am speaking to keeping a 1:1 file from the tivo to the pc's hard drive. The way I am being told they are doing this is not a 1:1 and also capturing it as an mpeg is a real quality loss.

You are confused, we are not talking about the actual broadcast of the game, but the process of getting that to the pc in the exact form, and the way it is being done is not. as far as the broadcast goes, I have a 5 lnb directv hd dish and a a hd tivo hdr20 700s.

The way I will take the game and transfer it to my hard drive will be the same process as the standard def. So it loses quality.

Now if you can explain to me how using the usb to run the file directly into the computer that remains the hd, that would be great. I dont see how it is done though. The production house that I am in every now and then does all hd work from there cameras to hard drives with components or digibeta decks.
I'm not confused.... i know exactly what you're talking about.

You need to first acquire the signal (via OTA HDTV tuner, HD-DVR cablebox or sat HD tuner) that can be dumped to the COMPUTER. Typically via firewire transfer and some utilities some video enthusiasts created.

Regarding your specific inquiry, sorry but I dont like or usse DTV/Dish as the HDTV quality is horrendous "HD-Lite" as many would say).

Search for your specific box here:

There is a comprehensive "transfer HD to XP" thread here with capable sources:

Yeah I get all of that, but the dumping to computer your talking about is where the loss is. I dont know how anyone could say the file is a 1:1 capture? I am in a production house every now and then and you have to have the right stuff to keep that in tact. It is a big process.

anyway, I am only talking about this because it is interesting to me and I am not looking for an argument simply curious to the capture process.

As for HD Lite....I have seen on my tv the hd with an over the air and with the new 5 lnb I have and there is no difference that I noticed.

trust me the file transferred is 1:1 bit for bit (you're just moving the file from the box to your PC not reencoding -- same way you would do from a digital camcorder to your PC)

1920x1080i
or
1280x720p

skim the XP FIREWIRE thread i linked for exact step-by-step. you have to read up on the new DTV MPEG-4 boxes and if those can be capped yet (with or without 5C encryption enabled). comcast cable has a much higher bitrate, as does Over the Air HDTV (ie. last weeks Dal/Colts game from CBS).

what alot of guys do is dump the full capture, then reencode down to 1280x720p WMV so it can fit on a DVR5 easily, in 5.1 sound

actually I am a member on the avs forum!! Great forum by the way!

I noticed they are making these files mpeg and that is a no-no.

Like I said I dont want to argue about this, I thank whoever is doing this for everyone because it is very cool of them.

I will upload some shots from my capture of the hd and the standard to see what the differences are.
