This Cowboys defense has me heated right now. And I have just about giving up on them becoming a dominant unit which is what we all expected from them when Wade arrived a few years ago.

But I can keep hope alive they can play better than what we have seen in the first two games.

And there is evidence they can make plays...

Shut down the Panthers on Monday night and a lot of what has happened in the first two games will be forgiven.

question is, can they be consistant in the plays they make: getting after the QB, getting position on a reciever, making tackles.

I really think if we were more aggresive with knocking receivers off their routes and just trying to disrupt the timing a little than we could have more success.

We don't have everyone backed up 5 yards off the receivers on a consistent basis like we did last year but at times we still do it.

Sometimes we play up but we don't try to get our hands on them at all.

I think our pass rush is really good and on 3rd and 4-9 yards we should try to get a jam. At least on the receiver who is lined up in the slot.

Even on this video you can see how we let the slot receiver off the LOS clean a lot of times.

hopefully wade watched rex ryan show that its best to keep coming on defense, that all the prevent type defense does is prevent you from winning.

exactly buddy, what is needed now is for players to demand more from wade to get the schemes right and for players like ratliff, ware and bradie james to say, thats it, No More Excuses! Do your jobs newman, jenkins, spencer, hatcher, ken hamlin. Either you do it or you and I will have a little meeting in a private area. Like Charles Haley told Aikman once, if the offensive players in the huddle dont do their jobs, let me know, I will see that they do it.

That is what is needed on this team, players holding other players accountable and not just talk but action. Like Darren Woodson one time caught S Roy Williams trying to sneak out the back door after practice. Woodson grabbed roy williams by his you know what, made him sit down and study film etc.

Like offensive linemen one time got onto a media writer the guy on first take that i cant stand, on a airplane. Players must step up and jerry jones must make wade accontable for not practicing enough of the blitz packages during preseason etc, and now wade is having to play catch up on run defense and pass coverage now.

No more excuses, players and coaches must be held accountable. If that means jerry jones working over wade for not doing the blitz packages right then that is what is needed.

Almost half of the starters on the defense are different from last year.

Hopefully they just needed a few weeks to get on the same page.

They'll probably end up being somewhere in-between unless Hamlin can step up.

I am not liking what I have seen from him so far.

Jenkins and Scandrick will get better the longer this season goes on.

Right now they make a lot of mental mistakes but when they guard a receiver who is running just a simple route they are all over it.

Yep, tipping a pass is useless if you aren't going to tackle a receiver on a screen pass.

I figured we'd eventually evolve into a dominant defense too once all the young 1st day draft picks got some experience, but that obviously hasn't happened. Always knew the raw talent was there and it still is there. The D is physically gifted outside of a scrub here and there like Hamlin, but it remains to be seen if they can get the mental side of the game to go along with it.

The D needs to get more exotic and the back 6 (MLBs + secondary) of the defense needs to get smarter if it ever wants to be top 5 quality. It doesn't take 11 pro bowlers to have a top 5 defense, we have enough "talent".

The D has been underachieving and much like the team did with T.O., has had nothing but scapegoats to try and use as an excuse for overall poor play. Keep blaming Roy Williams, Nate Jones, Bobby Carpenter, whoever the ****, it's probably Hamlin's turn next to explain why the secondary is sucking ****. Although Hamlin definitely deserves it, we got enough freakin talent. It's all in the coaching, scheme, and smart play by the coverage guys. They need to not have many mental errors and the coaches need to put them in positions to not be set up for mental errors.

Right now the defense focuses way too much on winning their battles cause they're "oh so much more talented" than the opposition. Offenses on basically any NFL caliber team are going to have their share of raw physical specimens as well. Even a player like Ware isn't going to win every single battle against elite LTs in the league or even our own division with Diel, Samuels, and now Peters I guess instead of Tra Thomas. If he doesn't win his battle a few times the secondary is likely getting exposed more often than not in our system. 3-4 defenses are built around trickery and getting into the opposing team's head and we never really do that. I've been waiting for the defense to get out of vanilla mode but it doesn't seem to be changing at all. We run a few stunts and other dumb quirks here and there and that's about it. No major pre-snap movement, fakes, or disguises really.

Simple way to put it is this defense needs to be more like Jason Witten and less like Vernon Davis. People have said time and time about Witten that they aren't even sure how he's always so open when he isn't overly fast. He's smart, knows the game and knows his opponents. On the other hand you have Vernon Davis who runs a 4.4, big tough dude but dumb as rocks. That's what our defense is right now and what it has been for the past half decade. If it's fixable through coaching or scheme I dunno, we'll see I guess.

Wade blitzes. He brings people from everywhere.

But the QB can get rid of the ball quickly because a lot of times we let the receivers come off clean on the LOS.

For now. There is always that thing called player development.

We have young guys out on the corners in a league that is predicated toward the offense and gives them every advantage.

Once these guys stop thinking and just play they are going to be really good.

No we or I should say I hope that they keep working hard to improve. Both Scandrick and Jenkins are young CB entering their 2nd season. What I hope for is they learn from mistakes and continue working to become better CB as the season moves on.

Didn't you see the slice? There's like 15 minutes of actual play throughout the entire game, the rest is people standing around and stuff....

The problem with our defense is that teams have figured out our weakness and it's not our defensive line it's our secondary...how do you counter that? easy...
Max protect and toss it to the receivers, game over. As long as you have blockers for the QB it's going to get the ball off...the way our CB's are playing I think it's a risk most teams are willing to take against us and it looks like it's working, credit Giants for figuring this out, Tampa kinda fell into it.

#1 a new DC who uses the 3-4 defense to it's full capabilities

#2 a new db coach cause Campo is terrible

#3 players need to do more homework(film study)

#4 better and smarter play calling

#5 better players
