Genuinely curious post:

A thought crossed my mind today..and I had no answer for my question. What happened to the Videotron problem?

When the Cowboys new stadium opened up, I remember it was the rave of the NFL (still is in many ways). The stadium technically didn’t have a name and quickly was known at the Deathstar, later coined “Jerry’s World”, then ultimately ATT stadium. It was a ‘one-of-a-kind’ beautiful stadium that housed (at that time, in 2009) the Guinness record largest Videotron screen that many are still amazed by.

But what I remember the most that year is the controversy over the Videotron. It seemed like every time a punt was made.. people was on the edge of their seats to see if the ball would hit the screen. Of course, this caused media outlets to ridicule Jerry and chastise him personally, which I found ridiculous.

It’s amazing tho.. I haven’t heard of this being a problem since those days. So my question is.. what happened? Did they adjust the height of the screen? Or did punters quit purposely targeting the screen?

I recall a punt hitting it in a preseason game the first year, but not that I can recollect, since. In that particular case, I seem to recall that the punter was trying to hit it (sacrificed distance for height). I think Jeff Fisher, who was on the competition committee, was the main instigator of all the hoopla.

It has been hit a couple of times. IMO the 1st seasons opposing Punters went after the screen and eventually just kicked normal and their punts were fine.

I remember how cbs would use that side angle to show the bottom of the screen on the punts to show how close the ball came to hitting it.

I think a handful of punters tried to hit it that first year (one of them being the Titans punter who was playing for Jeff Fischer who was known to hate the screen). It barely got hit a couple of times and I think they raised it about 15-20 feet to put the issue to rest.

I find it really peculiar that the day I think about this.. is also the same day I’ve heard, during the game, the most the commentators talk ab the Videotron in years. Kinda odd. Possibly due to the blow out and having to find things to talk ab
