Smith missing from practice
October 18th, 2007 – 1:51 PM by Kevin Seifert
S Dwight Smith was not on the practice field today during the portion open to the media. Smith has been nursing a hamstirng injury for several weeks but it is not yet clear whether that explains his absence. Hopefully we’ll get you more information later today. It is assumed that S Tank Williams is practicing in his place but that portion of practice is closed to the media.
UPDATE: Coach Brad Childress confirmed the hamstring injury has forced Smith into a rehab mode. Childress didn’t rule him out for Sunday’s game at Dallas, but he also didn’t say that Smith would return to practice tomorrow. In his place, the Vikings rotated both Williams and veteran Mike Doss during practice today.
In addition to Smith, RB Naufahu Tahi (knee) and LB Vinny Ciurciu (ankle) also weren’t on the field. DE Erasmus James (shoulder) and QB Tarvaris Jackson (groin) were limited.

The majority of the Vikings’ games this season have been seen by only a small part of the country. That won’t be the case Sunday when the Vikings visit the 5-1 Cowboys. The game already has been moved from a noon start to 3:15 p.m. so Fox can get the maximum number of eyeballs on this matchup.
As a result, it will go to 76 percent of the country. Fox also will assign its top announcing team, although that won’t include Joe Buck. No, Buck has not been taken off Vikings games because of his criticism of Randy Moss a few years back in Green Bay. Buck is working the American League Championship Series. That means Kenny Albert will work the Vikings-Cowboys along with analyst Troy Aikman.
By the way, there will be a profile on Adrian Peterson during both the Fox and ESPN pregame shows on Sunday. And if you can’t get enough on the rookie running back, ESPN.com has posted a story on him.

Smith not practicing
In addition to fullback Naufahu Tahi (knee) and linebacker Vinny Ciurciu (ankle), safety Dwight Smith (hamstring) was not on the field for the start of the afternoon practice.
Smith was a limited participant all last week but still started at Chicago.
On the lighter side, defensive tackle Spencer Johnson put big Pat Williams on the ground during an early tackling drill and the linebackers took turns giving diminutive assistant coach Jeff Imamura a ride on the blocking sled during a blocking drill.
