Vikes want Adrian Peterson back if he can settle issues

Adrian Peterson said "of course" when asked if he wants to remain in Minnesota. Could the Vikings be on the same page?

Mark Wilf, the team's owner and president, said Wednesday that the Vikings would love to have Peterson back in 2015 if he takes care of his issues with the NFL, according to ESPN's Ben Goessling.

The NFL suspended Peterson on Nov. 18 stemming from a no contest plea on what the league called "an incident of abusive discipline" toward his 4-year-old son. Because the appeal was denied, Peterson is not set for reinstatement prior to April 15. The running back's lawyers are arguing that Peterson should be reinstated before that date.

Wilf says the Vikings would love Peterson back, but the issue may not be as simple as reinstatement. Peterson is scheduled to earn a base salary of $12.75 million in 2015 and will count a whopping $15.4 million against the salary cap. Both those figures are -- by far -- the highest for a running back in the NFL.

Why do I have a hard time believing this?

Its easy to believe.

Peterson is scheduled to make almost $13 mil. I would want to be back at any job I was gonna make $13 mil at. Esp if my other job alternatives were going to be significantly less.

On the vikes side...of course they want peterson back after they cut his salary in half. Who wouldnt want that?

So they both want each other...just not on the terms each is thinking lol

They've consistently said they wanted him back...starting with Mike Zimmer. They've never mentioned his salary, but they've always said they wanted him back.

Oh, I know. My business partner is a Vikes fan, so we spend lots of time going back and forth on this one. Well, it's really just me needling him because I think it's funny and because he always used to say that Jerry would be an idiot and let Tony Romo walk (prior to this last extension) and he'd finish his career in MIN.

I just don't think there's any way they want to pay that $13M in the current climate there. And the HC can say all he wants that he wants his superstar back--of course he does, but it's also the smart thing to say in terms of the team chemistry. I just don't think ownership is going to want to pony up.

But this particular article is the team's owner and president saying they want him back. Not just the HC. My point is simply if they want him back, they will do it. AD is not going to play for that salary this year. Vikes are going to want money back after paying him all year to sit at home.

Well, I can't argue with the idea that if they want him, they'll keep him. They obviously have his rights. I just think, whatever number Peterson is going to accept is going to be a poorly kept secret in league circles. If a team he likes more is willing to pay it, it's going to be hard for MIN to play hardball. It might be that that number is too rich for Dallas and the best option for AD is still in MIN at the end of the day. But he's at an age and in a situation where you often see a change of scenery for guys, so that won't surprise me, either.

Every report has a caveat though. It's always about if his does this or that or if the league does this or that

I do not take them at their word. I don't feel they fought very hard to keep Peterson off the commissioner's list before or after his plea agreement.

It's pretty simple though. If they want to keep him they pay him the 12.75m they agreed upon. If he is going to take a massive pay cut, he is better off trying FA. If he shows up they have to pay him or cut him.

When is the last date the Vikings can cut AD?

After the last pre-season game?

Wait no, have to be earlier, because he might get an injury while Mn is responsible for the salary.

The last day they can cut him is the day before his contract expires

His salary guarantees after week 1m but you are right, if he gets hurt during camp or OTAs they would be on the hook as well

Doesn't sound like AD wants to stay in MINN:

Peterson said the Vikings' decision to work with the NFL to put him on the commissioner's exempt list last season felt like an "ambush," and he is "not in a good place" with the organization. "I know there are a lot of people in the organization who want me back," he said. "But then again, I know the ones who don't." The Vikings have been piling on the feel goods over the last month, but it appears there are still substantial hurt feelings on Peterson's end. Those hurt feelings should complicate any attempt by the Vikings to alleviate Peterson's $15.4 million cap charge. His future in Minnesota is truly up in the air.

The waters for Peterson appear to be getting deeper. Need to get a homerun in the draft.
