Vince Young: Graduating From UT Tops Winning A National Title

By Bruce Feldman

May 17, 2013 9:19 AM

AUSTIN (CBS SPORTS) – Vince Young produced arguably the greatest performance in the history of college football on its biggest stage when he carried Texas to the BCS title in the 2006 Rose Bowl. But as spectacular as Young was in Pasadena against top-ranked USC, that day still won’t feel quite as special as Friday morning when he is awarded his college degree from UT in the school’s graduation ceremonies on campus.

“This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for,” Young told CBSSports.com Thursday after his workout session in the Longhorns weight room. “I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom’s face.”

Young wouldn’t even try to put a number on the amount of family and friends he’ll have cheering him on Friday as he gets his degree in Youth and Community Studies. Among the family members Young rattled off on his list he expected to attend Friday’s ceremony included his dad, who really never had been in the player’s life before. Many folks who are close to Young and have gotten to know his family well over the years say they’ve never met the man before.

“It’s gonna be pretty packed I just know that,” Young said smiling.

Cool. Now's he's ready to go out and get that $35,000 a year entry level marketing job.

Never under estimate the connections pro athletes have. Yes, he wasn't smart enough to save the millions he made, but his name still caries weight, especially in Texas and even more so in the city of Houston. I can easily see him in a youth organiztion, making far more than 35k.

No where near 350k, but more than enough, that him getting his degree, was worth it.

Kudos to you Vince Young

I think Young may still be an NFL backup at some point.

Good move getting his degree in any case.

That's an interesting field of study. Wonder if he wants to get into youth coaching.

The funny thing is in his 2nd year with the Titans he spent the off season going back to UT to get his degree, that was in 07. The Titans had just hired Mike Heimindinger to be the new OC and there was some controversy over VY not staying in town to learn the new offense.

6 years later the idiot finally gets his useless degree and he's out of the league all together.

Some people just have to be negative and attack people.

The man earned his degree, something many people don't do. The fact that he got it speaks volumes about him. How anyone can call him an idiot and his degree useless is beyond me. Just because it is not a engineering degree doesn't make it useless.

Congrats to VY on doing something good!

Am I the only one who thinks he'd make a decent WR?

He may be an idiot but he did it right here. He got paid, he partied like a rockstar, and now he has his degree and can take advantage of his Austin connections to get himself a real job.

real job hell, if he can't get an office on campus and do nothing but shake hands and kiss babies for at least a hundred grand a year I'd be shocked.

Good for him. You guys should do a little wait & see before you go after him here. I'm not a VY fan, I do believe in 2nd chances.

Let me guess, his final exam looked like this:
Which is bigger?
A) Elephant B) your INT number C) your bill at Cheesecake factory D) the Moon

Exactly. Hopefully he can find a backup position in the league and make 6 figures a year to watch football from the sidelines, but worst case scenario he starts working for the LHN or Texas' program as an assistant coach or something. He'll be fine whatever he does. Plus, he doesn't pay for a thing in Austin... everywhere he goes, everything's on the house.
