I don't think there was a hidden camera show before Candid Camera. I watched their revived show in the 70s, but they had previously done one either in the 50s or 60s. These two clips are from that really old version. There have been a lot of funny hidden camera shows since then, but I don't think anyone has surpassed these two gags:

Used to watch this most every Friday night on CBC. Some of the stuff they did to people was nuts. They took it much farther than Candid Camera did.

I like The Carbonaro Effect. If you've never seen it, it's a hidden camera magician show. Some people get freaked out and it's hilarious.

I LOVE Just For Laughs and watch them all the time. They've taken hidden camera pranks to a new level. I've seen them do some impressive stunts. There's one where a ladder is leaned up against a true that drives away. Then the ladder falls over, and the dude on it falls down, and must be landing on something soft. There was A LOT that could have gone really wrong with that one if they hadn't set it up just right. it was set up just right so that the latter hits something so that it can't follow him all the way to the ground and land on him. That had to have been set up by someone with a bunch of experience in movie stunts. Someone could have been seriously injured or killed if they didn't do that one just right, but they pulled it off.
