Virginia has hired BYU's Bronco Mendenhall as its head football coach, the team announced Friday.

The deal is for five years and will pay Mendenhall $3.25 million a year, the school said.

"Bronco Mendenhall's teams have consistently won at a high level, and he's demonstrated the ability to create a strategic vision to build a program and then implement his plan to be successful," Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage said in a statement. "His emphasis on the overall development of student athletes and a commitment to academic achievement is in line with our goals of uncompromised excellence. We're excited to begin a new era of Virginia football and support Bronco and his staff."

Hmmm...back to my Big 12 expansion conspiracy.

Wonder if BYU was told they would not be joining the big 12 even if they expanded by two so they were not going to pay the HC more to stay. I also wonder if the HC knew this and decided to go to another school after many years of what some would say being underpaid. Word is, not sure if it is correct, that Virginia is paying him almost triple of what BYU was paying him.

Mike London was making more than double so I don't think it's that far fetched. Mendenhall was making less than $1m at BYU.
