Vista update removes wireless capabilities?

So Vista updates this morning, and as soon as it does the wireless stops working on our hp notebook. Run a diagnostic and it says no network adatper is installed. Tried a system restore, tried resetting the bios and installing drivers again, but alas it hasn't helped at all. HP now tells me I need to send it in to replace the motherboard. Thing is I did some searching and found other people had the same problem immediately following the update.

Anyone know what I can do?

Did I mention I hate Vista?

I have never used Vista before. Almost everyone I have talked to that runs Vista has had trouble with it in some way, and quite a few of them reverted back to XP.

Although system restore should have taken care of it, maybe you should try to uninstall the latest update and then reload the drivers for your wireless card (I had to do this on one of my XP machines. I know they aren't the same operating system, but with both of them being Microsoft I figure they have similar properties.;)). If that doesn't work then maybe try to see if your wireless card is working properly. Replacing the motherboard should be the very last action to take.

I updated this morning and didn't have anything happen.

Swell. I just bought my first new computer today in over 4 years. Spent 1500k on a desktop and 24" screen. Running vista. Thus far I love it.

Great to hear bad things about this investment.

I swear msft seems to creat more problems then it does fixes, I hope the rumors that they are switching to a unix base will come true

Every time I have installed Vista I end up reinstalling XP within a week or two.

Go here: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers

enter your laptop model number, then pick the correct version of Vista when the next screen comes up, then download the latest wireless network card drivers & install them. See if that works.

The thing about Vista that nobody really realizes is that you are "Beta testing" this new operationg system for MicroSoft...!! That's what they do to find the problems.

First of all, you should never use a new operating system until it's been in existance for a few years...same thing as buying a new car that has first come out...you just don't do it, however it's forced on you if you buy a brand new computer nowdays!

Your computer should have come with a rescue disk(s) of some sort, so if it did (and I would not ever buy a computer without a rescue disk, or start up disk)...try booting up from the disk instead of the hard drive. Of course you need to find the right "F" key to get into BIOS prior to the GUI loading. (The GUI is the "graphical user interface" or what you see as the "desktop". In the BIOS you can select the "boot option" from the C drive to the drive that reads the CD.

If you don't have a rescue disk....?

Good luck with Vista...you are doing MicroSoft a fine job of fixing all their "bugs".!!

And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Windows and other Mircosoft products are the most widely used, so they're going to see the widest array of settings, uses, software, and hardware. It'd be impossible for Microsoft to test for every possible scenario.

While there are some features that I don't like about Vista Home Premium on my laptop, I have to say that it's much better than people let on. Oh, and my wi-fi is still working great.

Iv'e had Vista for the last year & half on my lap top with no issues other than a learning curve??

I have XP on my PC & no issues either. I got my pC for standby just incase Vista crashes but so far it's great.

NO wireless problems here either.

This has been true forever... especially with Microsoft. If you get past the frustration... its makes perfect sense.

Yep... and then you are STILL gonna get the bugs... less... but bugs nonetheless.

Microsoft is why we are where we are today. Microsoft is the future whether it be by way of product or acquiring product/company. Its their M.O.

Somewhat true statements, yomick. However, I've had XP for I don't know how many years, and I never have a problem.

Computer maintenance, however, is the real kep to keeping an operating system running smooth.

Spybot
McAfee
Ad-Aware

are the only things you need to keep running down the road, and some basic System Maintenance like defrag, cleaning out your porn pages, getting rid of unwanted cookies...things like that.

;)

You might need to find the official Vista driver for your make/model for the card. Try uninstalling driver than reinstalling it. Remove it if external and put it back in, maybe your having power issues. Try adjusting your power settings if on a laptop. Try posting on the official forums for your wifi manufacturer,or Try searching those posts for similar problems.

If Microsoft keeps pushing Vista, and the upgrades for XP become more memory intensive, i might have to switch to a really lite Linux distribution. Right now I regret upgrading to SP3.

I haven't had any problems with SP3.
