Another thing, force your protagonist through a one-way door. He has to make a hard decision early on or recognizes something early on, and it guides him throughout the story.

Frodo recognizes his is the ring to bear and only he can do it.

Luke loses his Aunt and Uncle and has to go off-world to find the Princess, nothing's left for him to stay behind for.

Harry's parents are killed and the person who's doing it might be coming back to finish him.
