Wade Has 14 Days
October 20th, 2008 by Joe Rodriguez (CowboysBlog.net)

Looks like others are thinking like me in regards to what is going to happen next with Wade Phillips. I blogged about this yesterday during the 3rd quarter of the game. I layed out the scenario in which Wade will be given until the bye week at the lastest; at which point, Jason Garrett would be handed over the team as the Interim Head Coach.
DMN Blog had very similar thoughts on this scenario, which further reinforces my thinking as well:
But Jerry might be forced to make a move, especially if the Cowboys lose their next two games (a likely scenario) and enter the bye week with a losing record. Dallas would be in Save Our Season mode at that point.
Maybe it makes sense to give Garrett a trial period for the last half of the season. If he can’t right the ship, Jerry can make a run at Bill Cowher or another big-name coach this winter.
For now, Wade Phillips is still at the wheel, and the league’s most talented team appears to be headed for a fiery crash. (DMN)
That’s pretty close to what I said yesterday, so there are obviously more writers and fans thinking the same thing…Wade Phillips’ days in Dallas are numbered, as in 14 days to be exact.
I’m going to add more into the scenario I layed out yesterday. I think Jerry Jones thought ahead and brought in the people he did to supplement Wade’s staff. Prime example would be Dave Campo. Dave Campo knows Jerry, and he’s a defensive mind, he’s been a successful defensive coordinator in the NFL. Judd Garrett was also hired as the Assistant Director or Pro Scouting, let’s not forget that part. That being said, if Wade Phillips is indeed canned by the bye week, which I believe will indeed happen, then you’ll be saying good bye to Brian Stewart as well. There is no way we keep the horrible Phillips understudy in training on board as our defensive coordinator. Campo will likely take over as DC.
Both Garrett and Campo will be judged on how they handle the team on the interim basis. If all goes well, and I mean a complete turnaround into the playoffs, then Garrett will remain as head coach, and Campo will remain on as DC. Furthermore, with Campo on board, we could make a transition back to the 4-3 if we wish. The 3-4 has been a complete utter failure under Parcells and Phillips, who were supposedly 3-4 gurus, so if neither could get it going, then why keep running it? Some defensive systems are cyclical, and I think the 3-4 has run its course in Dallas.
Now, I know we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but I thought it would be interesting to see the potential makeup of the staff in the coming weeks. Jerry is not dumb, and clearly has his contingencies well in place.

Maybe this is the fire that is needed to get Wade out of his 13-3 mentality. If he doesn't coach now and make changes, then the guy has no business coaching this team....

I don't think that's the mentality Wade has. I think that's just what he gives the media who's been on his *** since the day he called himself Mr. Fix-it.

Thank you. Wade has said many times this year that every season is a new season, and you see every year that playoff teams from one year don't make it the next. He even said at the Rams postgame PC that this team seems to think that it's last year's team and it can just walk out like last year and win, and that won't work.

But don't let the facts get in the way of some fans' rants.

stupid...doesn't matter what you guys think...it only matters what Jerry thinks. He will not fire Wade Phillips regardless of our record in the next two games.

Wade doesn't block, tackle, or play special teams, and there's no coach who's going to come in and change the offense or the defense in mid-season...you have to keep the system until the offseason.

Firing Wade during the bye won't do a thing except maybe get us an even better 2nd round draft pick next year.

It won't happen based on the schedule....Wade would have to have a public meltdown to get fired.

I don't know how I feel about this either way. I'm not sure that the media saying they believe he'll be fired come the bye week if things don't go according to plan is necassarily going to scare him into believing his job is on the line.

I also don't believe that thinking he's going to lose his job is going to make him a different coach, for better or for worse. You've either got it, or you don't, and no amount of job security, or lack there of, changes that fact.

Linehan didn't block, tackle or play specials teams, but he was fired. Look what has happened to the Rams since. Haslett has turned that team around ... at least for the past two weeks.

I'm not saying the same will happen here if Cupcake is fired. Players do have to play, but it's the coach's responsibility to get them ready and fired up. That's obviously not in Wade's demeanor.

Firing wade phillips will do nothing to help this team this season.

Interim coaches are 12-22 all time and have never made the playoffs.

Only one Interim head coach has ever kept his job, Jeff Fisher.

Odds are more in favor of the team bouncing back with phillips than without. And most importantly you would take away the best defensive coach on the staff.

Firing wade phillips is over-reactionary and short sighted. In the offseason it is a serious issue and most likely will happen and even then what kind of staff will be assembled. Jerry called this one the best he has ever had....

What needs to happen is the fans and media need to fire Jerry. Let a football guy come in and hire a new coach and then let the coach hire his staff. Put out the message that jerry is going to sell ads and luxury suites and a football guy is going to run the team.

Until then, we are all at the mercy GM Jerry Sunshine and his actions.

In my opinion, the Cowboys will not abandon the 3-4. DeMarcus Ware is the best 3-4 player in the entire NFL. You want to get him on running backs and TEs and away from double teams by playing him all over the place. He beat the TE for a sack on Sunday. In a 3-4, Ware doesn't have to go head up with a LT the entire game. That means a fresher and healthier DeMarcus Ware. Anthony Spencer is an undersized defensive end who is tailor made for the 3-4. These two players are the cornerstones of the defense. You have two big investments there. You don't want your two most prized front 7 players going up against 320+ pound LTs on every single play. They will wear down due to their size and build, and you will shorten their careers.

Finally, you don't tailor the defense to fit a bunch of under-performing players.

Are you going to get more production out of Canty, Spears, Hatcher, Carpenter...ect.. by moving to a 4-3? Ratliff can play DE or NT. He fits the 3-4, and he is a big impact player.

No. You are going to make it more difficult on your best front seven player and the guy with the most promise (Spencer).

Phillips 3-4 is a one gap scheme with 4-3 concepts. If these guys can't cut it in this defense, what make anyone think they can cut it in a 4-3?

Well then, all the more reason to fire Wade and make Garrett the interim HC.
