Coach Wade is one of the top five defensive minds on the planet. He not only understands schemes but he features a keen awareness of his players. In short Phillips is unparalleled at creating packages that maximize the skills of each of his players.

With that backdrop let's consider the following:
1. Last season whenever DeMarcus Ware was dropped into coverage the Cowboys could no longer produce much pressure on that side of their defense.

2. Towards the latter part of the season Spencer started to emerge, giving the Cowboys three effective pass-rushers (Ware, Ratliff, Spencer).

3. We saw against Minnesota what a defense can do when it can produce an overwhelming rush with just four guys rushing the quarterback. When you can consistently get into a quarterback's grill, and still surround receivers with 7 in coverage--you can bring an elite offense to a halt.

So how can the Cowboys release the demons of hell while only rushing four guys, and still occasionally startle and unhinge the offense by dropping Ware into coverage? The answer in a moment.

The 2010 Cowboys defense will rank among the top three in the NFL if it stays healthy. Here's how.

Have you seen the trailer for the new Predators film...where an elite human soldier announces to his peers..."this planet is a game reserve and we are the game."

That's what opposing quarterbacks are going to feel when facing the Cowboys 2010 defense.

The emergence of Spencer gives the Cowboys three base threats, each deserving a double team. The rise of yet another disruptor could provide what author Malcom Gladwell calls "The Tipping Point."

Gladwell doesn't know squat about football but he describes numerous cases in human history where one emerging dynamic creates a cascade effect...it shifts the equilibrium and changes everything. Stability gives way to a stampede.

That dynamic for the Cowboys could be: Brandon Williams as a third down pass specialist.

"But wait, T-Ro" you say. Williams is an OLB, a backup for Ware or Spencer...but yet you are talking about playing him alongside Ware?"

Exactly. I contend that the the brilliance of Wade Phillips can and will concoct a third down scheme that will put Spencer, Ratliff, Ware and Williams all on the field. Whether that puts Ware or Williams into a 3 point stance is immaterial to the discussion. The issue is to get four explosive quarterback assassins on the field at the same time.

Add in the emerging Stephen Bowen and quarterbacks will be headed to the sidelines on stretchers.

More on B-Wil, and the debut of dynastic defense a moment....

First he wants to tell us about how things are shaking up with third string of the rams, the arizona QB situation, throw in some quick baseball highlights, what this season looks like for sam bradford, then hell tell us that wade plans on employing some common cover 3 schemes he ran all last year at the end of the show.

lol what the hell is that? a preview?

I fully believe that in our nickel we have enough ability on the line to get to the quarterback without bringing much if anything. wade is also has a good feel at using blitzes to free up specific players with his delays and twists

then when you sprinkle it in every now and then they're even more effective.

i'm drafting our defense in every fantasy league that i'm in this upcoming year.

As much as I enjoy the QB-killing imagery, T-Ro, this isn't that new. Wade did it in '07 with Ware, Ellis, and a young Spencer in that "Cowboy" look. Last year he thought our best third rusher was Bowen, so he stayed in a three-point stance.

But yes, he'll put the best players on the field first and figure out the alignments later.

Any formation that is designed to free up your best pass rusher up the A gap is fine by me.

A word of thanks to my sponsors. Now back to it...

Let's look at what people, including the coaches have been saying about Brandon Williams.

Calvin Watkins, DMN:

"There are times you watch practice or even when the coaches view practice film and think Brandon Williams is DeMarcus Ware."

Coach Wade:
“He’s very quick off the ball and has good pass rush feel and I think he’s learned the techniques that we’re trying to tech. I feel good about him. We will put him in the game and see how he does. If he can be a guy that can not only hold up but more than that, we’ll play him more.”

Now, discerning listener. What do those words mean.
1. Wade says, "We'll play him" Presumably as a backup. That's a given.
2. Wade says, "If he holds up (plays as expected) we'll play him more."

I already can see the motor in Wade's head turning. He says,
Unleash the Hounds!

In my next installment I'll break down what this might look like: the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

C-Lab, Ellis was always more true DE than he was pure OLB. B-Wil is a far more speedy, explosive OLB...Obviously he isn't Ware, but he's a Ware starter kit.

I'll explain some dynamic new schemes we might see later when I return this evening.

After discovering the "3-3-5" I can't wait to see what else you come up with. Perhaps a blitz where a defensive lineman drops into coverage while another defender rushes the passer in his stead.

Exciting.

No, theogt.

As in the words of Steve Jobs before a major product lunch, I'll just say this about a few of my proposed schemes and defensive wrinkles.

"You won't be disappointed."

meanwhile T-Ro is drawing up plays for us to pass the ball 98% of the time and only run the ball on third and long.

Wow, I almost feel guilty for reading the first 18 posts without a commercial break!
