Yes it started off horribly tonight, but his defense started off pretty bad at SD too. And they've turned out ok. So let's just give it time before we make judgements.

2004 SD (Wade's first as DCoord in SD) scores:

Week 1: Gave up 20 points (not too bad, right?) ... to the Texans.

Week 2: Gave up 34 to the Jets

Week 3: Gave up 23 to the Broncos

Week 4: Gave up 17 to the Titans (with Billy Volek as their QB)

Week 5: Gave up 21 to the Jags (Leftwich threw for 357 yards)

Week 6: Gave up 21 to the Falcons, including two 4th quarter TDs

I think it's a defense where timing is critical. It's gonna take awhile for the players to get that timing down. Let's give it time before we call it a failure.

Week 7: They gave up 6 points to the Panthers

Week 8: 14 points to the Raiders (they won 42-14)

Week 9: 17 points to the Saints (they won 43-17)

Get the point?

I want to be the first to offer my free expression of thought before the positive vibes of the thought police take over.

We gave up 35 freaking points!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled freak out.

Good post Rack. Sorry for the intrusion. Having a little fun.

The man is 100% proven. It's not as if he took some time off like BP and came back and "the game has passed him by". No, he's been successful for years all the way up through last year. We can't place the poor defensive play on coaching anymore.

At this point, when we play poorly on defense, it's got to be on the players. Has to be.

i agree. W/ a new coaching staff, there will most likely be a time of adjustment. This is precisely the reason why I'm sort of surprised that we enjoyed so much success on the offensive side of the ball. Not sure if we are that good offensively or if the Giants are that bad. I guess we'll know in a few weeks.

Did you even read the first post?

Point is it's gonna take THE PLAYERS time to get their timing of this new defense down. This isn't a defense where you can jsut line up and play (like our D last year). It's a lot more complex. The timing and precision of the blitzing will take time to master.

You know another thing?

Eli lit Wade's defense up two years ago in San Diego, too. He had a great day, early in the season.

And the Giants lost that game, too.

And? I don't see that thread pointing out POINTS AGAINST specifically. It refers to pass defense.

Thanks for your useless reply though, Bud.

it's not completely useless, since most of the points scored on us were on the pass

Are you serious? A new head coach comes in implementing an entirely different scheme and you want to give him more than one game before you judge him a failure?

What's wrong with you?

That would be silly. :p:

I guess I could see doing that if Wade was actually out there on the field not making plays and running dradful looking blitzes. Something about execution....I don't know.

I know. I was agreeing with you. :D I was just saying that if this continues, well, it's on the players. There is no possible way you can blame Wade Phillips for not being a good defensive coach like you could Zimmer. None.

Who would have thought the vaunted offensive guru Norv Turner would have trouble scoring points while the vaunted defensive guru Wade Phillips would have trouble stopping people.

The 2 TDs that SD were all but gifts too-if Thomas Jones was in there, those fumbles would NOT have happened(How Benson and Pederson can't secure that darn ball is mystifying).

And the Bears should have blown it wide open at halftime-if it weren't for a miscommunication b/w Rex and Berrian.

Sorry, I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. I don't even know who's agreeing with me at this point.

Time to go to work...
